She is a stinkpot (thanks for helping with that) and when we first discovered her she had a brown spot on her shell that was pretty big, also she had something that looked like skin hanging off of her leg. She could not swim right either and would float oddly to the left, it's been about two weeks since then and she looks much better...brown spot gone, and she swims right, what was wrong with her?
Also, she and our male NEVER get out of the water. Is that normal?
Thanks!!! |

ok these are 3 separate things to talk about..in fact they're 4:
1- brown spot: could be shell rot or could be only algae. pix will help in that. (i know u posted pix i'm just giving u the choices )
2- "skin hanging off": is in other words-->shedding. this is a sign that the turtle is growing bigger. exactly like when the snake changes skin which means it's normal and there's nothing much to worry about (especially that i understood that they live outdoors so it's not a temp issue right?)
3- swimming or floating lopsided: this is the most concerning thing. it happens when the turtle has water in its lungs and is one of the signs of pneumonia-->RI. did u notice anything else like swollen eyes, soft shell, gasping for air, not having the appetite..?
4- never get out of water: the opposite is what u should worry about and they usually act so when they are new cz of the change in the environment. as they get used to u u'll see them out more so just give them some time _________________ Wed 10/27/2004 is the worst day..i lost my best friend Leo
so now i have a female RES, Green, and a cute stupid male YBS, Mint

1. Ok, the brown spot is almost all the way gone.
2. They live in an indoor but warm atrium
3. She can swim pretty good now...she isn't floating anymore, no swollen eyes or soft shell. She eats pretty good now, but does get tired easily.
4. How long will it take for her to feel comfortable enough to get out?
Thanks for the help!!! |

1- glad to know that and since it healed that fast, it could've been algae only cz shell problems take a long time to get back to normal even when treated.
2- what are the temps in there? cz warmer than needed water can cause excessive shedding.
3- how does she get tired easily? u mean like she hangs to rocks more than swim? cz u said they don't bask a lot.
4- depends on their personalities. u might notice that even after a while one will be more outgoing than the other. but in general it should take a week or two if they do see u everyday.

1. It is still a tiny bit brown on the edges, but it is almost gone.
2. I am not sure what the temp is...I would say around 70 degrees most of the time, maybe a tad bit warmer...I am not sure about the water temp.
3. When she swims for a while she will go to the bottom and just wait for the food to drop, or just to look at us.
4. I have noticed that the male is friendlier than the female. We have had them for over two weeks, and we see them everyday, Monday through Friday, and there are other people walking around as the Atrium is surrounded by offices. |

1- ok try to get the rest out with a soft toothbrush. don't be so harsh with it. they should get off easily.
2- hmm ok somehow good but if u could get them a bit higher it'll be great. btw, are there basking and heat lights?
3- well, u know they can't keep swimming all the time
4- that could be a reason. she might be getting stressed-out bcz of all those visitors. she'll be ok though so don't worry _________________ Wed 10/27/2004 is the worst day..i lost my best friend Leo
