I have read that you could put in a cuttlebone (yes for birds) but it has many benefits for your turtles the biggest being calcium. It will also file down the beak.http://www.turtlecare.net/beak.htm Be sure to take the hard outter coating off first.

I have put in one of the turtle shaped things (only a piece at every water change) and my turtles seem fine. Every once in a while I add a piece of the cuttlebone. But they have never had any illnesses or soft shell. If you read other posts they advise against it because it serves for other purposes, have you tried veggies?

Lol. My turtles will eat strawberries. I give it to them once in a great while. Also I have tried romaine lettuce ( I think thats what it was, so long ago) I have also tried a piece of apple. They seemed to enjoy that as well.
