I took my Missy to the vet the other day. She had been limping for 3 days, but I gave in and took her. She was in so much pain or whatever she wouldnt chase my cat. So not like her. Turns out she has dysplasia. The vet said it is going to run about $2500 per hip. She is only 9 mths old. So to all pet owners get pet insurance. I thought about getting it on her but now she is "labeled" ( sorry if spellings off, been long day) SO now I dont know if I could ever get her pet insurance They did put her on Rimadyl and she does not seem to limp unless the meds has worn off. |

Poor baby. I am sorry she has to go through this. It is so horrible.
First thing I would do is get a second opinion. Then I would research the disease as diet and exercise play an important part of how much your dog can be effected by the disease. Then I would get ahold of the breeder as it is a genetic disease.
Didn't you just say a little while back they were having another litter? Along with it being such a short time between litters it is a hereditary problem they should be aware of. A responsible breeder only breeds to better the line, so they will be interested to hear what is going on. _________________

I'm so sorry for your Missy! I've been dogsitting a friend's chow for the last few months, and he has hip dysplasia. My girlfriend told me it's hereditary, and that she wants to give him glucosamine. I'm not real sure if that's the thing to do, if you ask me, and she hasn't (but I've still told her!!) she should take poor Zeus to the vet! Am I wrong? _________________ shade & sweetwater! |

I have metioned this to the breeders. (PLease keep in mind that my dog is not full blooded) But just the same I did tell. Anyway, they thought they might be having more pups, but thankfully not going to happen. There is no sign of it in the genes of either dog, and when I told the vet this she said it could just be a "freak" thing. So she said I could give her glucosamine and rimadyl and take her swiming. Now that I have my computer back I can do more checking. |

So, glucosamine is actually recommended, then? I guess I shouldn't have been so hard on my friend....whoops! _________________ shade & sweetwater! |

It's just really hard to watch a pet suffer through something so painful and debilitating... right, turtle-grl? It's too bad Missy is suffering at such a young age, Zuess is atleast 9 years old now and just a year or so ago is when it became painfully obvious that it was hurting him... poor guy! I know exactly how you feel! _________________ shade & sweetwater! |

YEs glucosamine works. But getting her to take it is hard work. It took 2 of us. One to stick the pill in and the other to give her some water to help her swallow. She is my girl and I will take care of her to the best of my ability, just like my turts, and then some . I have a few ppl I know ssay well why not just put her down. I think to myself ok put one of ur kids down and see how you feel. It just burns me up that some people can be insensitive like that. When it becomes too much for her than I will but not now. |

I know what you mean! A lot of ppl just don't understand! When I lost my dog a few years ago, it was her heart, she developed a horrible cough and the vet said the only thing we could do was keep her comfortable...so that's what we did. Our kitty followed suit, the two of them were inseparable! But it's one of the hardest things I've been through! And to go through it twice in just a month or two, it really bit! My girlfriend is living in a right now that she's not aloud to have a dog, and I'm such a worry wart that I drive myself nuts trying to take care of him. Atleast she didn't leave her kids with me!! My son's a handful enough! _________________ shade & sweetwater! |

I worry about it everyday, he already behaves like he is 16. Thats why I love my turtles. I can sit there all day watching them chase fish. Very relaxing to me.
I wish Grandma would help me out with just a few hours to relax, but we wont get into that. Have fun on vacation. |
