|
|
Late last night my husband tells me there's eggs in the tank, we werent sure what to do, they were in the water we moved 4 of them to behind a rock so they wouldnt be broken, (still in water) This morning I'm looking for info. One additional egg was found this morning broken. Shes got nothing more than a rock to crawl out onto, I assume that's why the eggs are in the water.
I'll head out to get vermiculite and a heating pad this morning.
I have 3 turtles in the tank, we've had them since they were the size of a quarter about 3 years ago. I had read that they needed to hibernate to breed and since they hadnt and arent 5 years old yet I didnt think this was even a possibility, but they've proven me wrong! As of right now the eggs are still in the water, they were rolled when we moved them last night (we didnt know, till I found that this morning)
Any chance any of the little guys will make it? I assume they're fertile I've got what I beleive to be one female and two males. Any suggestions for a complete novice?
Thanks!! |

No chance, to very very slim chance.
The eggs have to be laid in a dry area or moist that is. Laid in the water and the water seeps into the shell contaminating everything. You should have taken them out of the water. Also she will need to get out. Females will lay a larger clutch often times up to 20 eggs. |

Is there a way to tell if she's pregnant? And how often will she (is she likely to) produce eggs?
I've got more than 4 there's 6 but 2 of them dont look good soft shell is pouching out on one end, and looks discolored.
I've got them out of the water now, they were in water about 10-11 hours total. |

Your best bet is to read Willies article at the top of this section on breeding turtles. It is a little long but it has some great info on what to do. Here is the link for you.

a good sign is that a turtle having eggs will keep digging around. watch her and if u see anything similar then provide that nesting area for her and be careful with moving the eggs around, NO TURNING OR FLIPPING u already know..
anyways u know now that ur turtles are mature so maybe it's time to separate them so they don't do it again. unless u want those babies and if u do, plz make sure that u do a lot of reading b4 u decide to breed cz it's not easy at all.
btw, no they don't need to hibernate in order to breed
so good luck and keep us posted about the newborns (if any) _________________ Wed 10/27/2004 is the worst day..i lost my best friend Leo
