Hello turtle lovers!
I need some advice. A friend of mine bought a "miniature" turtle for her boyfriend, and they asked me to keep Tiny for Christmas break while they're away. I did a little bit of research and I really don't even know where to start. My friend said, "Oh, he doesn't need any special care...just a feed him every day." They kept him on a dresser in a glass pie dish with some river rocks! Tiny is only about an inch long, I have no idea where my friend bought him, and I don't want him to die on my watch, but I also don't want to give him back if he won't care for the little guy when they find out he's not going to stay tiny.
Tiny is a slider...not sure which kind, he's green with yellow patches by his eyes and a yellow belly with funky cool designs. I'd appreciate any advice.
Thanks,

welcome to the board ok now we know that Tiny is in safe hands for the meanwhile since he's about an inch, the right setup for him would be a 10-20 gallon tank with a filter, heater, basking area, UV bulb, and a heat bulb. sounds too much? a filter can be replaced by a daily water change and a UV bulb by 2 hours daily of direct sunlight.
keep him warm (low 90's F) so he stays as active as baby turtles are.
he does sound like a slider but are there any red markings beside the eyes? cz he's not a yellow-belly.
so how's the little guy doing? got used to u yet and is eating? _________________ Wed 10/27/2004 is the worst day..i lost my best friend Leo

Wow, thanks! Tiny is adjusting alright. He didn't seem to like the train ride over, but he definitely has no problem chowing down on a couple pellets a day. I don't think he likes the dish he's in, he keeps trying to swim up the slick glass sides. I'm going to run out and grab a tank and stuff asap.
Oh, one more question, is tap water okay? I worry about the chlorine/flouride content messing with his little body. Is there something I need to treat it with when filling up the new tank? Thank you again! I sure hope he makes it. _________________ remember: wherever you go, there you are. |

By the way (Turtle sitter here), Tiny has an orangeish blotch on either side of his head, but they're not red...they're more yellow than anything. _________________ remember: wherever you go, there you are. |

that means he's a red-eared slider. the "red" ears are sometime yellow-orangish. maybe cz of mixed breeds or something
do u drink from tap water? i don't really know how could u tell if it's fine for them or not that's why i took the short-cut and used drinking water but check this, scroll down a bit and u'll find something about chlorine http://www.austinsturtlepage.com/Care/waterquality.htm#Aspects%20of%20Water%20Quality _________________ Wed 10/27/2004 is the worst day..i lost my best friend Leo

I always use a capful of Chlor-out when I clean the tank because my town's water has a high chlorine level. Once I forgot to use it and one of my fish died. |
