I've had my 2 baby RESs for two weeks. They both starting eating fine right away, which I was thrilled about, but about 4or 5 days ago, the little one, Franklin, stopped eating the foods I was giving him, except for feeder fish and worms. He won't eat anything else. Should I be worried that he's not getting everything he needs to be healthy from only protien? Thanks!

fish and worms should be given as treats only. try mixing them with pellets. good luck _________________ Wed 10/27/2004 is the worst day..i lost my best friend Leo

Well, that's the problem. He won't eat the pellets, or anything else that's not living. Should I just stop giving him the live food and see what he does then? I'm just worried that he'll stop eating altogether. |

yep try it. he won't starve himself but if he's got a solid head and didn't eat for more than a week then try another way _________________ Wed 10/27/2004 is the worst day..i lost my best friend Leo

So I stopped giving my little guy worms and fish and just started giving him pellets for a couple days and he wouldn't eat anything.
So the last couple of days he's just been sitting on his rock, and won't really move unless I pick him up. His eyes have been closed a lot too, and he only opens them when I pick him up and put eyes drops in.
So, just now, I tried giving him some worms and he went straight for them as though he was starving. Why won't he eat anything else?
Also, do you think he is sick? He's acting the way that my little Toby did when he got sick before he died. |

If you are not grossed out very easily, I may have something that might work, you can coat the pellets with mushed worm, or if the worm is big enough, you might try stuffing the worm with the pellets, that way he can get his treat along with his food.
I hope it works, let us know if you do it. _________________

Well, there is another way that I was thinking, I have one of those refill kits for my printer, it came with three syringes (one for each color), the needles are dull so it would be easy to make a pellet paste and inject it into the worm (earthworm or mealworm), heck you can probably inject crickets and other live things, there is just no end to it.
I know it will work because I was trying to make pellets flavored with tuna, but the pellets came out too thin, I eventually gave up. , but it does work. _________________

Well, that does totally gross me out, but I'm willing to do it if it will help Franklin. So, thanks for the tips!
What do you guys think about his behavior? I'm thinking that my tank and water might be too cold (water is at around 70, and outside of the water a few degrees more), but, when I woke up this morning the temp was about 5 degrees less, so I am worried that during the lows at night the tank is going too cold. Would that make him act strange? I am going to buy a different heater this afternoon.
The thing that worries me is that my other RES, Olivia, is acting normal and eating fine... So that makes me think that Franklin is sick.
Please help me! If I lose another Turtle I will just die! |

hopefully not the temps should be in the low 90's, that explains his behavior. olivia's immunity could be stronger than his so don't take it as a rule that they should behave the same way _________________ Wed 10/27/2004 is the worst day..i lost my best friend Leo
