i think this is sick!! even if the believe that the shell is hard, there are bones inside it so of course it should hurt. it's like engraving ur nails _________________ Wed 10/27/2004 is the worst day..i lost my best friend Leo

If I knew someone did that I would call animal services. That's so cruel. People think that just because it's a shell it has no feeling, but it definitely will hurt the turtle. Like Dixie explained, tell him that if he'll carve his name on his fingernails than you won't say anything about him carving on his turtle. What an idiot! (pardon). This could make the turtle very susceptible to shell diseases too. That's just wrong. I hope you can talk him out of it. _________________ 2 big RES, 1 Flowerhorn Cichlid, 1 Cockatiel. The shell is a living thing, it would be like scratching your name on your skin with a sharp object, it would bleed, and it would be very prone to getting infected, especially if the water is not cleaned often. Try to talk him out of doing it.
Go to this site to read up on ways to safely mark a turtle:

Well, if he doesn't listen to you, at least you tried to do what's right, the rest is up to him and his conscience, if he has one. _________________

i hate things like that.
when i first got my turtles, my aunt told me to paint on their shells so i'd know which one was which. i was appaled.
that's like putting a sharpie (type of permanent marker) on your kids face so you know which one it is..

A few months ago my turtle developed a shell fungas. I had to (lightly) scrub his back with a soft headed toothbrush and anti fungal (pets - wardleys actually) cream.
Iended up in tears... their shell DOES blead, and yes is made of bone, it does not take much to get down to that level either. When i took of the first level blood was sort of coming to the serface and i was at white bone, i only had to do it around the shell edges but i broke my heart.
He is fine though now.
If your friend does this please report him, as he will be hurting the turtle, making it more prone to disease and just for being a complete concieted tosser.
Also it is a known fact that people that can be that inhume are usually social outcastes become serial killers and who the heck wants to be friends with that

i would call the ASPCA or something..... the shell is like, infused with their ribcage or something, its like carving live bone or like you guys said carving fingernails.... also people have almost proven that serial killers and child abusers 'start off' by torturing animals... i know because all my brother watches is animal planet and we were watching animal police one day and they said that... _________________ I'm back! I agree! There is something seriously wrong with a person who would do that to a turtle! Somehow the human race never ceases to disgust! I hate to say, but I work at a news station and have to hear all the horrible things people do every day... no wonder I would rather watch snappy then the television, ay?
