Well I have had my Fluval 404 for about 3 months and my water is crystal clear. My recomendations would be 1) go for the 404 instead of the 304 there is no sence in buying it twice. 2) www.thatpetplace.com. That is the cheapest I've seen almost a hundered dollar difference as compared to my local pet stores. They shipped it promply and the box was not damaged or crushed. Thats about it. Media is not that expense and cleaning the filter is fairly easy.

It's not the SAME.
Fluval 404 = 340gph.
Penn Plax Cascade Canister Filter 1000 = 265 GPH
To me that is a Big difference. |

I hate to say ths but thats what I was getting at. You can buy Joe Blow's filter but gph is a big difference. Thats when I say on any filter recomendation get the biggest you can get because if not 2 years or so down the road your gonna want the extra gph.

| I have the Fluval 404 for a 50 gal tank and after initial difficulty (hole in intake tube?) it's been great for keeping the water crystal clear. Even though it sits on the floor right next to my tank, it starts right up every time I clean it. The most important thing I found is to renew the Vaseline around the gasket every time it's opened. And be sure to watch out for and remove plant debris gathering around the intake filter. |
