|
|
I raised my Red Ear Slider and Mississippi Map turtles from babies. They have been together from a 29 gallon to a 75 gallon. They are fully grown (I hope) and in the 75 gallon. They have always seemed to get along well, although the Red Eer Slider was always the more aggresive. It eats goldfish, etc, while the Map only eats floating crickets, turtle food, etc.
Saturday (two days ago), I caught the Red Ear Slider biting the Map on the neck. He left a mark on the Map. I went to the pet store and bought some preventitive medicine (sulfur soak) for the Map. I saw him try to do it again.
Is this common? I think if the Slider wanted to hurt the other badly it could.
What I don't want is for the Map to get injured badly. What are my options? Why the change in aggresiveness?
Seperating them is not an option, unless I get rid of one of them (another 75 gallon setup is out of the question). I love both of them, but don't want to keep both if one is in danger. |

hmm the common dilemma
maybe they need a bigger space and the slider is acting territorial cz it doesn't sound like a mating issue.
btw, welcome to the board _________________ Wed 10/27/2004 is the worst day..i lost my best friend Leo

Welcome to the board.
Yeah, unfortunately, people think that turtles need company and later on they start to fight and they have to be separated, you can either give one up or get a bigger enclosure and hope they won't fight anymore.
I will probably be going through this in a while myself _________________

It's appreciated though. |

there's always plan B
one of my turtles acted aggressive for a while and i didn't want to give her away neither i was able to provide another setup for any of them. what i did was punish her, i left her in a small tupperwear in the bathroom for 2-3 days and then put her back with the other one. i'm not sure she understood what happened but thankfully she got her manners back.
btw, u can try taking the aggressive one out and changing something in the tank then put him back in. hope it works, good luck _________________ Wed 10/27/2004 is the worst day..i lost my best friend Leo

I put a top to one of those huge tupperware tubs, cut it so I could still keep the aquarium light on top. They are both seperated in a 75 gallon. My neighbor helped me cut it and he said, the neighbor is giving away an aquarium bigger than that....whether that is still true, I don't know.
Hopefully the RES will see it as temporary punishment, and the Map will get some temporary relief. I saw the Map racing around the tank earlier, which caused my immediate action. I had to do something. |

Good luck with your turtles, I hope that the aggressive one takes a hint and stops harrassing the smaller one. _________________

Ahhh, the days of a clean tank, fish in the tank, etc. Most importantly, peace between them.

This one is cute. They aren't much bigger than a quarter here.
Sorry for the bad quality pic.

| I will try the trick, I just want to make sure I am home long enough to watch them both. Maybe this weekend. Dumb question, but will they remember each other? |

| I tried tonight, but I got scared. The RES came close and was looking at the Map. The Map looked scared so I seperated them. I will try when I can spend hours watching them. |
