I have two female yellow-bellied sliders that are a year old now. They were both at the bottom of the tank waving their 'hands' at each other. One-year-old is enough to tell the sex of the turtle right? (They both have flat bottomed shells.) I only saw it happen I think twice, but still.... Any thoughts? Surprised

I think they have to be older than 1 year to tell what they are.

They are supposed to be at least 4 or 5 inches in order to be able to tell the sex of the turtle. Mine do the same thing, but I believe they are both males, I am still keeping an eye on the nails to see if they grow any longer. Laughing Laughing

You should be able to have a good idea when the shell length is about 4 inches. Turtles, either sex, can exhibit this behavior. If they're not sexually mature or of the same sex, it's likely a display of dominance, not mating.
