O.K... I have a red-earred slider named Dor. He\'s about 2yrs. He has a friend he lives with- a plecostomus named Mr. Plecostomus. Lately I\'ve noticed Dor, face to face with Mr. Plecostomus, shaking his front feet around near his face (alomost like trembling). Ever heard of this? Is this some kind of turtle dance or is he going to eat his friend? Mr. Plecostomus is just as big as Dor and they always seem to get along in their 20 gallon tank. Please help if anyone has seen this.

Do they do this when young - even though too young to mate? I watched my Map do that one day to the RES, but these two are way to young to mate (and I really can\'t be definate on sex yet - esp RES - way too little). These two get along beautifully, so as long as it\'s not an aggressive thing, it\'s cute to watch.

I honestly don\'t know. The two RES I had when younger were fine together; I\'m wondering if part of the trick is letting them grow up together? All 3 of mine did some \"nipping\" early on, but that seems to have abated. Now they push each other out of the way to get food, but no nipping.

I can\'t explain it - I\'m just happy they get along. From what I\'ve read, if two turn out to be males I\'ll probably have to separate one - but hopefully that behavior doesn\'t start until they are old enough to mate - around 3-5 years, according to what I\'ve read.

How is Green doing with the new turtle so far?

I saw the pics - they are soooo cute. Just like puppies, they grow up to quickly.

You mention Green overeating - how much does she eat? I would term my Franklin \"chubby\" too - he\'s about 2 1/2\" long, and 1 1/4\" from top to bottom. Bigger head than my map turtle, who is actually longer than Franklin. Haven\'t ever had a yellow belly slider before, so hoping this is normal. But, Franklin\'s the food \"gulper\", so I still think he\'s overeating. Am now feeding the other two apart from Franklin to try and control his eating.

thanx annie:)
she eats anything and when i tried to control her she became very aggressive and started biting..now when there is a little guy in the tank i don\'t want him to end up eaten so i just give her what she wants and mostly vegetables..i hope it has the effect of low calories on turtles too

she\'s chubby in the way that her neck is huge and she can completely let her head in..her back feets are very chubby too and there are fats getting out from the holes..is this what u have?

Yes, the description sounds like my Franklin. I\'ve gotten sneaky with him; I drop one pellet at a time where he is, then drop several in an area behind him. The other two caught on quickly - they now look for food behind Franklin\'s back. He gets about 7-10 pellets (baby reptomin)per feeding, as opposed to over half he\'d eat before. I can see some of the fat around the legs disappearing already.

Think it\'s time to get some Romaine lettuce to feed them, as the Anacharis in the tank just doesn\'t last long enough. Next year I\'ll plant broccoli in the garden, since I see that on the \"approved\" list of vegetables. Want them to get organic, not stuff with pesticides in them.

I\'ve not been successful force-feeding a turtle. Do you know what Mint was fed before he came to you? I\'d try that first, if you haven\'t already.

Do you feed Mint in the water (food and turtle are in the water)? If not, try that - it might stimulate a natural reaction to eat. Maybe a bit of Romaine and a small piece of pellet to tempt Mint? I\'m sure you\'ve tried a lot already..... If that doesn\'t work (or if you\'ve already tried this), start a new post with this topic and I bet you\'ll get some good suggestions.

Good luck Dixieee! Keep me posted!

Oh - just read (and then researched) some stuff about safe, nutricious vegetables for turtles. You might want to check the World Chelonian Trust website sometime. There\'s an article on Nutrient Analysis of Replacement turtle and Tortoise Foods that has a COMPARISON LIST of vegetables. Guess what\'s better than broccoli? DANDELION LEAVES! This is so good, as my back yard has been pesticide free for as long as we\'ve been here, so stuff in it - ie the dandelions - is safe for the turtles! Much cheaper than Romaine, better for them too. And they grow in abundance.....
