I can\'t give you a 100% sure answer on that. From what I\'ve heard, the fluttering gets the female \"in the mood\" or puts her some sort of trance. Then the male proceeds to carry out his mating as we might expect he would. I am not for certain on that though. One of the males that I have has actually...well, let his parts out without even being around the female. It looks different than what you might expect. But it exits right from his tail...looks like the same place he excretes from. I have never seen mine mate. The female always seems to get annoyed and swims away as he is doing the front leg fluttering. That\'s just what I\'ve seen so maybe someone else can tell you different.

I believe it is also an aggression/dominence thing. I supposedly have two females (only time will tell) and they do the fluttering to each other all the time, they are completely in each others faces! Then one will back off and swim away. I know it is confusing when people say they are \"mating\" I think this is just the \"warmup\" to the actual act. The male also carresses the females face with his long claws (at least from what I have read). I saw a show that showed two sea turtles in the act, and is was nothing that I could have imagined, very strange to see. I guess that tale is very important for both of them!!!
