i have recently purchased a yellow bellied slider turtle and he wont bask under light i have provided for her it is a blue day light bulb in a 40 gallon breeder tank with 4 inches of water in it with a large flat slate rock under light. I put her on the rock then a few seconds later he slides off back in to water. i dont understand y she does this. any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I have only had her home for three days and he is about 5 inches long
Also is it normal for my turtle to take the basking position in the water fully submerged except for head sticking out?

First off, you don't have enough water in the aquarium. Provide a water depth of at least 1.5 to two times the turtle's shell length. If there isn't enough water in the aquarium and the turtle flips over, the turtle will not be able to get back up. And if the turtle stays upside down for too long, he can die.
For the basking problem, you say that you've just got the turtle? Then that is most likely why. Your turtle is just getting used to the new home. He is scared, give him some alone time to settle. Eventually, he will start basking and won't dive off when you enter the room. _________________ R.I.P. Steve Irwin |

| well i got the little girl a floating turtle dock yesterday and wouldnt you know it she got right up on there today when i wasnt home i was like u gotta be kidding me lol. my wife was home and sent me a pic i was like the happiest i have been since i got her. I guess maybe she didnt like the rock i had in there for her or it was to far away from the heat lamp she seems to like it now gets up there often and stays there for sometime. I guess i just needed some patience for her to relax to new surroundings and stuff i also got her a fitler for the tank and have ithalf full it is a 40 gallon breeder tank. |

I'm glad that your turtle is basking. The key thing to owning turtles is patience _________________ R.I.P. Steve Irwin |
