I'm looking for 4" + Diamondback Terrapins. I'd prefer concentrics or ornates but i'm interested in all subspecies. They will be housed in a 1000 gallon indoor pond with other 4-6" DBT's so a minimum shell length of 4" is mandatory to insure their safety. Please contact me at amazonsmurfette@yahoo.com if you have anything available

We are not allowed to keep as pets/specimens in New York or New Jersey: one of the great ironies. Ironic because you can buy live adults to take home and cook for dinner, but you can't keep them alive, you risk a fine and of course, confiscation. Special research permit required, considered a threatened species, locally. Don't accept any from this area, they are illegally wild-caught.

Actually, softshells and snappers are raised for food sale in many parts of the country. I personally don't eat turtle, but many people do: it's common in Cantonese cooking and, believe it or not, traditional for Italians during the Lenten season (they cook a meal with seven kinds of FISH, and TURTLE is considered one of the kinds of fish, that's how old the tradition is). What's more interesting to me is how quickly people who used to eat turtle regularly stop when they get a turtle pet: I know one who gets up in sub-zero weather to go and buy fresh shrimp for her two spoiled sliders, talks to them non-stop. But used to cook turtle for her family regularly. That's why we have the forum and the turtle society and the zoo, to let people know more about these fascinating creatures that share the earth with us. And the more they know, the less likely they are to eat them. Be proud of your pets!

I am proud of my little angel. I don't think anyone in my family will ever eat turtle after the way i pamper jade. I think they would think it's a crazy idea to eat turtles now. That's so sad i don't know why people eat exotic foods like that. It's just as easy to eat regular stuff. But people do what they do, and a lot of people feel that beef and chicken and stuff are not good food sources too. So i can't judge too hard. But still... turtles are pets not food!!
