Right now I'm having serious doubts about Thor's quality of life, maybe he's just getting used to his environment, but I'm not sure.
He might have to go back for adoption in hopes of finding a better home then I can provide.
Yet I still spent over 400$ on turtle accommodations.
I was wondering, what sort of turtle would grow to a size where it would still be happy in a 40 gallon tank?

What about Bog Turtles, heard they are semi-aquatic and grow to about 4 inches, and thats it.
Never seen them on the marker though.
But there must be others like it.

Well, at least Thor started basking for short bouts of time.

where are you located because here in the USA turtles under 4'' that are sold to people are sold illegally(sp?) So that is why they aren't on the Market.

I'm in Canada, and it seems here no one follows these rules.
Everywhere I go they sell inch long sliders, and hardly ever push the potential buyers to buy good tanks.
The last time I was at the petshop a little girl remarked "but look mommy its really small and cute, can we have it"
The petshop owner gave me the stink eye when I said they got much, much bigger.
The mom was happy lol.

Anyways, I figure that rule is in place because of the high mortality rate of these little guys, but what I'm talking about is a full grown turtle that doesn't get past 5 inches in length.

I'd love to buy one, and have my tank be good enough for its needs.

He's cheered me up today, went basking a few times, only 15 minutes a pop, but it was better then before.

Up at my dads place, in the country, a big pond or rubbermaid thing could work, but I'm in the city of Montreal, moving into a 2 and a half this summer with my girlfriend.

We wanted a pet, but I couldn't stand the thought of keeping a dog or even a cat cooped up in a tiny apartment all day. Bit hypocritic when I think of what the turtle must feel now... But for a cold blooded animal, he's starting to warm up to me.

I just hate to see him go round his tank slipping along the walls looking for a way out. Or pushing up against the filter and trying to climb it for some reason.

I saved him from euthanasia, and I figured I was doing right by him, but I still can't do much about upgrades just yet.

In 6 months if I have the money I'll consider switching to a canister filter just to free up some space, the fluval 4plus is much bigger then I expected!

It means that since the animal is not able to be adopted because of its bad temper, biting, too unsociable, or has just been too long with whatever agency that adopts them out, they are "humanely" put to sleep, although, I don't see how "humane" is measured by some people, I guess that if they put you to sleep before they put you to "sleep" you won't feel a thing, theoretically speaking.

I own 2 male red eared sliders which are affectionately called crush and squirt and we absolutely love them i was wondering if anyone new of where i could get a decent used 30 - 44 gallon tank for them as i am in need of a new one the one i have is a 30 long but i want square or rectangle to give them more room to swim i live in the springfield massachusettes area if anyone could help we would appreciate it.

Just for everyones knowledge, the four inch rule exists because, in the past, people thought that turtles would outgrow salmonella. In actual fact, many turtles do not have salmonella at all, and they do NOT grow out of it. despite this, many laws still exist today prohibiting the sale of turtles under four inches. Turtles in the wild don't tend to have salmonella because the water they are in washes over them and takes the bacteria downstream and away. turtles in captivity do not have this factor in their lives, therefore salmonella can become a big issue. Salmonella became an issue with turtles after Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles came out (the original series). many children wanted pet turtles, and ignorant parents let them keep the small, cute turtles as pets. Many children, because of the negligence of their paretns, contracted salmonella and got very sick or even died. (salmonella is essentially food poisoning, you can get it from eating undercooked or raw chicken as well). Because of htis, and other instances, the laws banning the sale of smaller turtles were put in place, and due to the ridiculousness of the legal system, many states (and provinces) and countries are banned from selling, trading, or giving away of turtles. some states have loopholes that if the turtles are going to be used for educational purposes (like a class pet) then the sale of the small ones is allowed, many pet stores obviusly exploit this loophole and anything from class pet to "i homeschool my child" is acceptable for the "educational use" clause.

So, just some turtle tidbits of information, so you know.

Thanks for the reply's i went out and bought a 40 Gallon breeder tank and my boys are in their glory! Embarassed

We Love them very much and are very happy that they are so happy in their new home.

Go to Walmart for big tanks like that...they're hella cheap. I think Petsmart sells them for like 29.99
