Cuttlebone is a very good source of calcium, another is dandelion greens, they are both good for turtles. Very Happy

cuttle bones can be good, however they often make the water foggy. Try looking at fish stores for calcium blocks, sometimes in the shape of turtles or fish. Just make sure they have the calcium part. These can be nibbled on but also dissolve slowly in the water so even if your turtle doesn't bite the stone they are still getting calcium.

So far mine has only taken a bite out of it when I dangled it infront of his face... More out of wanting to attack then anything else !

But with the dissolving kind, wouldn't it just be passed through the filter.

You might like to read this link, it talks about water quality:

The last paragraph talks about those white turtle calcium blocks
in this section:

Since my guy doesn't seem to independently eat his cuttlebone, is it bad for me to occasionally pick him up, put it in front of his face, and wait for him to bite?

I doubt he will bite it, besides, they need to be in the water to be able to swallow, since they have very little saliva of their own. Very Happy

Oh, he definitely does bite it, and right after I put him in his water.
He'd eat me if I were small enough.
