i have 2 turtles that ive had for a couple of weeks now, and they are starting to not get along. one sometimes bites the other one and chases him out of the water. the bitting one is also eating all the food the past couple of days. the one getting bit is not going in the water and seems sort of depressed. he also is gasping for air alot and once in a while is making a clicking noise. is it because hes getting dominated in his surrounding's or is he just sick. A side note- my other turtle has just been bitting and pushing around my other turtle since hes been having these side effects. if hes sick is it just that my other turtle is sensing it?

It could be that the one has a respitory infection. What type of setup do you have? Temps?

Sometimes, if the turtle is just coming down with it you can raise the water (low 80's) and basking temps (high 80's) to boost the immune system and they can then fight it off. They should also have a diet rich in Vit A and calcium along with a good UVB bulb. If he has been sick for a while you will need to get him to a vet for antibiotics.

Turtles are not really social animals and they often do better alone. Fighting is a common problem when keeping more than one. Try feeding them their pellets in a seperate container. A simple dish pan with a little water the same temp as their tank works well. Take them out seperately to make sure they are both getting enough food. You can also float romaine lettuce and carrot shreads and pieces of a cuttle bone in the main tank for them to munch on. Low calorie foods, but rich in nutrients and vitamins, let them graze naturally without being so aggressive.

Two turtles of either sex can be aggressive. Actually the more agressive are the females.

i have the tank at all times around 80-85 but at night i but it down to 7o-75. i feed them feeding worms which they don't seem to like and pellets and some times i treat them to fruits and veggies but i dont feed them lettuce anymore because it blocks the filter. right now they are in a 20 gallon tank but today im buying a 90 gallon. they are Mississippi map turtles if that makes a difference
