Hello, I just decided to buy a turtle and bought all the equipment needed for it. It will have a 25 gallon aquarium and will be semi-territorial (sp?) so half-water and half-land. I would like to know if there is a specific kind of turtle that won't grow as big as the other ones. I heard one sex usually stays smaller than the other. I don't really want to have to upgrade the aquarium size as I cannot afford it. I've read the article about releasing your turtle in the wild and I live close to an island where a lot of turtles reside so if it does get too big I would bring it there. If you know a specie that wont' grow too big, please let me know. (Before I bought all the equipment I was told that turtles stayed smalled by a pet store worker). Thank you!!!

They grow big, from 6 to 11 inches , even more if you have the required space and females usually get bigger than males. Very Happy Smile Laughing .
About your tank I think it will last you for three months, then your turtle will be to big for its tank and you`ll have to get bigger one.(That happend to me)

The Sternotherus (Musk Turtles) grows to 3 to 6 inches, they do have a slight to medium oder that is typical of the species, hence the name Musk turtle, also Stinkpot turtle. Very Happy

Here is a link to a caresheet and info about that turtle:
