I am in the process of upgrading my turtle tank. I have a 55 gallon tank. I was wondering what filter would be good to get that does a good job but isn't too expensive. Several different names/brands would be appreciated.

I was also wondering if anyone had any ideas for a substrate. I know gravel isn't good to use, and I've used marbles in the past, but I was just wondering if there were any other ideas.

Thanks for the help!

River rock is a pretty good option, as long as it is bigger than the turtle's head.

Sorry I can't help with the filter problem, I still have cascade type filters, two of them. Neutral

My friend uses a Fluval 4 in that amount of water and it works well, although I don't know if I entirely believe him given how dirty turtles get. Another friend uses two Fluval 2s and they do keep the water clean in about that water. You probably want to look at an internal filter for that amount of water at any rate, if you're looking to stay somewhat inexpensive. I'd suggest upgrading to a canister filter that will be good through your next tank upgrade but then the cost shoots up.

Get a submersable fluval one of the larger ones I just got one and i LUV it and my turtle can play with it all he wants and not get sucked in like before and he loves riding the current so im sure yours would love it to and make sure you get him some guppies to play with or he can get lonely sickness which is very bad
