okay, so i am getting a new filter for my 40 gallon tank with two RES. I currently have an internal Whisper filter for up to 40 gallons (its the one that makes a waterfall with the outgoing water), and the poor thing just cant keep up. I am considering getting a Fluval 405 external filter. I would appreciate any thoughts or concerns. thanks!

I planned for the future with my last filter and bought a RENA Filstar XP3 (canister filter), that is geared for 170 gallons. It's running in about 65 gallons of water (75 gallon aquarium on a stand) very well and is pretty quiet. Ideally it will last through even another upgrade (although this tank is plenty big and it should be years before I need to upgrade).

This article compares probably the most common canister filters: the Filstar XP3 and Fluval 404 with pros and cons.
