I just joined today. My turtle apparently doesn't know he's a turtle. He seems very happy in his zen-like environment, but he prefers indoor a/c and soft blankies on linoleum to any substrate. When chicken is being cooked he will come out of hiding and go to his dish. lol. How does a turtle know that? It's not like there are chicken BBQs in the wild! Enjoy the pics!

Sorry, am new and apparently clueless. I found a post about how to get pictures in here but I guess I'm not reading them right. Sad

Did you disable the BBCode down below? If you did you may need to host it somewhere else like photobucket.com

i'm sorry. i first thought you were referring to my icon picture. the little turtle on the zen flower pot is one of those "pot hanger" things. looks just like a little box turtle.

also, the picture of your guys is great. don't they all have such distinctive personalities in their faces and demeanor? am sorry to hear of your loss. this new creature in my life has brought so much joy. there would certainly be an emotional void if he were to leave this world.

I know what the literature says. But this box turtle has to be forced to go outside. We made the small area of deck outside the kitchen turtle proofed and I put a hide out there ON a blanket. He still freaked out. We have tried leaving the back door open to see if he would approach it on his own. That didn't work. In fact, since putting him out on a cool sunny day a few weeks ago, he runs (literally) in the opposite direction when we go to open the door.

I'm a therapist and I treat PTSD. I have no idea what caused this little guy to not want to be outdoors, but, as you can see from the pictures, he makes himself at home inside. Brian spent a very hot summer day putting up extra reinforcement in the zen garden thinking he'd feel safer, but noooooooo. You can see how very relaxed he is inside. If you see his Flickr photos, you can view his terrace and the look he had stomping back inside. He is a cool turtle though Smile

Nemo is my first turtle. I had thought he would primarily live outside. This is all new to me. I've seen videos on YouTube of turtles going in and out of a house...when the door was open. I would think a turtle could use a doggie door. They tend to push on stuff anyway. Maybe others who participate on this forum can share their experience. I've simply been adapting to what this little guy shows me he needs--along with good care advice!
