|
|
Hi
Someone please help me!! I've have a cute bubby turtle, I've had her for about 3 weeks. Tonight when I was feeding her I decided to check her over to make sure she is all good. Well I discovered her shell is quite soft Could someone please provide me with some instructions to get her shell back in good condition. I've provided her with everything she needs, food, vitamins, UV light and heaps of love
All help is really appreciated. I have noticed that most of the people on this site are in the US. I'm in Australia, but I'm assuming all turtle care is the same

how small is your turtle? it is normal for them to have soft shells as babies because they are not fully developed yet...as it grows its shell should harden. _________________ http://punkflash54.blujay.com |

My turtle is about 5 - 7cm. So his is still quite small.
Thanks for the reassurance that it is normal. I checked her this morning and it seems only the edges are soft not the whole shell. |

| how do they obtain soft shells, my map turtle never leaves the water pretty much, I don;t think he likes to bask. Could that give him a soft shell? |

| From what I've read in books and on the internet, a turtle's shell needs Calcium to keep the shell hard. However the turtle needs vitamin D3, which they get from the sun and the UVA/UVB lights, to absorb the calcium. I was worried that my turtle was basking (he's always in the water) but he does sit in the water on the top so I think he is still getting the light. |
