This afternoon I was leaving my apartment and almost stepped on what I thought was a toy turtle. I picked it up thinking it was a toy lol, and it moved. Heres some pictures of it. One of my roommates and I went and bought a 10 gallon tank and a turtle land bar for the tank. We bought some meal worms and some tiny minnows for food. Only problem is the turtle is not eating. It is so tiny that you can still see where the yolk sac?, is on its stomach. It is moving around like crazy though and very active. Doesnt seem to be scared at all anymore. It took a snap at one of the meal worms when I put it in a smaller bowl so it had more direct contact with them. But im afraid it wont eat.

I would have let it go but I wasnt sure. There has been construction with machines turning over dirt right outside my door, and I think this guys' nest got turned up.

Any suggestions please help!

Also I live in Connecticut, this turtle appears to be a snapping turtle, but the shell almost looks as though its an alligator snapping turtle? Sorry for the poor pictures, my camera isnt the clearest.

by the way, we named him dirtbag since he was coated with dirt and mud when i found him.

You might want to put more water in there because turtles can't swallow out of water, they have to be under. My turtles love this stuff called Aquatic Turtles Food and Turtles Treats from Zoo Med's. I mix some of each into their food and they love it!

Thanks everyone, Im going to try tuna fish, we also just bought Reptomin pellets, although for some reason i doubt they will work. He did eat a partial minnow I think.

One more question, we bought a filter but had to raise the water level way up. Will he struggle to breath and die from exhaustion? We have a floating dock in there, but he doesnt go up on it. The water level was very low before so he could put his head up to breath but the filter wont work when its that low.

Any help is appreciated, keep in mind he's a snapping turtle and not a RES!

First of all it looks as though you have an alligator snapper. They need water. Fill your tank about half full of water, maybe one of those cheap aquatic plants to give him something to rest on if he gets tired.
