|
|
my cousin got a red-eared slider a month ago, she didnt and still doesnt kno squat about turtles, is a little smaller than the length of a ping-pong ball, she moved yesterday, and she called wondering if i wanted it because i have turtles, anyway, she has kept in in a 3 inch by 8 inch container, and its been like that for a month, and when i picked it up the water looked like it hasnt been changed at all, i was mad, so i took it and its gonna stay in a 10 gallon tank for now, and i need some tips about red- eared sliders and some goo ideas besides the one setup on allturtles, i and gonna have to try hard, this is new to me, the aquatic turtle thing, ive always had box turtles and once a mud turtle, please help,
Thank YOU!!!! ~ Katie ~ |

first u have to get some food go for reptomin if u have it already good job also the water of the tank sould not be higher than the length of its shell... u need to get a basking platform likeon this page. http://www.turtlesale.com/home/index.php?page=basking-platforms
look for SMALL FLOATING TURTLE DOCK FOR TANKS 10 GALLONS AND UP
than u need a filter u problie have one tell me if u dont. u might wat to put some fake plantes in but dont over do it. and a heater but dont put the seting to high set it around 77 degrees to 80 degrees. and dont forget lighting but u probly have aready.
if anymore questions ask me and tell me how it goes. _________________ Tara Dakota

depends what kind of filter you had for your fishes, most filters for acquatic fishes are not good for turtles. if you want affordable i would strongly suggest going on craigslist and finding someone who is selling a used filter since they are somewhat expensive at the stores but highly recommended for turtle habitat.
I purchased a heater for $30 at petland.
i read up on turtle tank set ups that its not highly recommended that you use fake plants for turtles because they like to eat anything they come across and the plastic might do some harm to them in time. I wanted to purchase some plants to decorate the tank so i purchased algae plants which are good for them to eat. _________________ **Plasmik**

here is the same kinda website but directly to the heater page look for VISI-THERM DELUXE HEATERS
http://www.turtlesale.com/home/index.php?page=heaters
its the third one down.
there is also filters there here is the link.
http://www.turtlesale.com/home/index.php?page=filters-refills
the filter that i used for the longest time was called FLUVAL 1 PLUS and i personnaly think itll work for your turtle mostly because it kept the tank of four meassy turtles clean but its your decision. _________________ Tara Dakota

what is the smalles size i can get when it is full grown?
my dad has a big "tub" this outside that he uses to wash the dogs i dont know how many gallons it holds, but is big would that be okay to keep him/her in when it it full grown? oh, and how do you set up yout tank?
he/she hasnt eaten anything ive tried 5 different foods, should i put some guppies in the tank???
should i take it in for a check up??? is it necessary?
how to i tell if its a male or female at this age? |

the smallist size u should get is 36" long and the tub idea is not so smart because when your dad washes the dogs he probly uses soap. if so u cant put it in there because any resedue of soap left behind will poison the turtle. because your turtle wont eat try some fish anykind dosent matter just get the little guy to eat. if e dosent eat at all try feeding em and leave the room but count how much u put in. if in time e dosent eat anything take em to get a check up.
at this age u cant tell if its male or female so when e gets begger if e has really long nails and a long tail than u have a male. if e has the exact oppisite u have a female. _________________ Tara Dakota

if you have pellets, try soaking it in water based canned tuna. it's smell is enticing.
have you tried live foods? such as worms. frozen blood worms. guppies you would have to fatally injure it so the turtle can actually catch it on its own with ease. |

okay, i have tried the "put five pellets in leave for a long time and come back and count" thing may times with many different different foods. i have put 3 guppies in, he/she looked intrested, sometimes he slowely followes them, then gets bored. ive tried blood worms mixed in with this kind of gel thing, NOT INTRESTED, he just ignores it. ill try the tuna thing. what if i put small peices of shaved ham or turkey, would that be okay?
about the tub thing........... thats what i said to my dad about the resadue, but he said if you scrub it down with hot water it should come off, any way if that doesnt work..... how about a 30 or 20 gallon with a 5 or 10 gallon on top for basking? would that be ok? |

i wpould guess that would b ok but i still say no to the tub idea. the ham and turkey idea is worth trying. put a peice on a stick and make em chace it for a while then give it to em. if e gives up just put it in front of em.
tell me if it works. a 30 gallon tank with a 10 gallon tank on top should work fine for the future. _________________ Tara Dakota

I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO!!! he seems so sad and lonely without another turt...... he was very active around the other turt, but now hes all sad, and doesnt do anything.... HELP!!! i want the best for him....... would my box turt keep him company??? should i let them play together once in a while or will they get to territorial and hurt eachother?? u need 2 know they dont need a buddy and that females get up to a foot in size. some turtles take a while after coming home to get comfortable enough to eat. take a piece of ham/turkey/chicken and stick it on the end of a stick. do u have a shish-ka-bob stick? if u do stick on there. _________________ Tara Dakota

how long can i keep him in the 10 gallon? i cant get a 30 gallon until i earn my own money.... somehow..... or at least when i get christmas and/or birthday money |
