yeah thats wher i got my res male now 2 years old i have had about 4 of those but 3 died. my mom had to fly them here so she had to stuff them in her bag with hair pins around them so the guards couldnt tell when they went throught the screen. but my 1 male res is doing fine but they dont have any place to get out of the water with no lights or anything they just keep swimming in little plastic pans. but their only 5 $, so its not a bad price, lol.

my 2 res were purchased on canal street as well and its true that purchasing them by these people on canal street are risky because they dont take care of the turtles too well and you dont know how healthy they are. i now experience so many problems with my 2 res. i never knew when i first received my turtles that they needed so much attention and so many things to just live well. now that i know i see that its alot of work and you have to be dedicated to your turtles.
Now that i am learning so much about RES i would like to start from scratch and be more careful but i would never think to kill or give away the 2 Res that i have now, however it seems that i am always experiencing a new problem with the two. I just hope they live long and healthy, thats my big mission _________________ **Plasmik**

One of my neighbors gave me two 6 in red eared slider males three months ago. He said his daughter bought them in Chinatown three years ago. They are in fine condition. He gave them to me in a 10 gal. tank, but I transferred them to a 20 gal. one. I just bought a Fluval 4 filter for them and arranged their basking platform over the filter. I have been feeding them Reptomin sticks and some freeze dried Krill. Also put in some romaine lettuce, but they don't care much for it. Bought some kind of frozen turtle food which they don't like and it's too bad because it is full of healthy things. They look fine and I make sure the water is clean all the time.

it always seems like something new everytime. i think one of my turtles my have respitory infection, i am not sure but i could of sworn i heard him breath heavy when he came out for air, i normally dont hear them when they come out but i heard one of my RES breath heavy, not wheezy so i dont know if it could be respitory infection because eveyrone seems to say that you hear wheezing but is deep breathing just the same?
it almost sounds like a human coming out of the water for air it was so weird. _________________ **Plasmik**

OMG, I had no idea that a turtle could have a respiratory infection !!!! My turtle tank is right next to the couch I sit on to watch TV and I have never noticed them experiencing any problems. You can actually hear them gasping for air ???? So now what do you do, take them to the vet ?? My vet takes care of turtles also, but I was told it costs just as much for turtle care as it does for dog or cat ! My friend that gave me these turtles has never had a problem with them so hopefully I will have the same luck. Vet bills are extremely expensive, as my cat was in hospital last Christmas for a urinary blockage. All I can say is Christmas was bleak last year !!! Let me know please if you take them to a vet and how that goes and how they examine them ????????

I dont know for sure if its respitory infection, i heard it the other day but only from one of my turtles and today i dont hear anything, its happened before where i will hear one of my turtles making odd noises like yawn or breath heavy but other days doesnt make a peep that it leaves me clueless. I dont care about paying the money for having a vet look at her but i dont want to pay only to find out its something normal or anything too bad that i can resolve on my own and get stuck paying the bill for that.
where do you live? are you in NY? do you have a vet? thats the other problem is i dont know where to go and im scared that i will send her to the wrong vet and they wont do anything, ive heard some pretty bad stories of people who went to vets and they charged them alot of money and did absolutely nothing to help them. _________________ **Plasmik**

I live in Queens, NY and have been going to the same vet for years and years. I have cats, dogs, bird and now the turtles. He gives me a break sometimes, but the cat cost me over $500 and I had to practically beg for a discount. Two years ago I had to take my Artie, the chi to the specialist and it cost $2,000, but his eye is OK now. He had a corneal ulcer. My dog and cat vet said he doesn't take care of turtles, but one of his associates does. In fact I spent more time asking the associate about turtles than I did about the cat (who is fine now, by the way, but has to eat special food, more money)!!! I sometimes procrastinate and that is not good, then the problem becomes worse. I will ask my friend about turtle talking. I think he said something about that. They never spoke to me yet!!!!!! LOL

My husband originally came from Ridgewood. I came from NYC. We've been here for about 42 years. From that you can tell that I am not a young person, but I think young!!!! I go to the Animal Clinic of Queens on Metropolitan Ave. and there is an office on Fresh Pond Road also. If you go to a vet in the city, always ask if they treat turtles. I don't know if all vets do. I have cats, dogs, bird and now these turtles. I spend more time with the turtles than any of the other animals. I got my last doggie from Waggytail Rescue. Perhaps you heard of them. Keep those turtles healthy for it's costly going to the vet. What about the ASPCA in NYC? Do they have a facility to treat turtles???

not that i know of. i'm trying so hard to keep them as healthy as possible but i was negligent in the past when i first got them because i was foolish to easily assume that they were low maintenance. i didnt know that there was so much to learn about turtles. most people dont when they put the idea of owning a turtle up until you actually do research on them.
i hope they are healthy but sometimes i wonder if they truly are. they are very active and seem happy but i cant help but wonder because of the way they were handled in the past that there might be problems that will one day show up.
hopefully im just being paranoid _________________ **Plasmik**

No No, you're not being paranoid, you're just being a good turtle mommy!!! I used to have turtles years ago when I was a kid and you would just put them in a bowl of water with a rock and they were fine. Nowadays, it's an expensive filter and huge tank and all kinds of rocks and basking platforms. I go to Petland Discounts every week for something new for them. I go to Petland on Metropolitan Ave. in the Metro Mall where BJs is. The sales person named Victor is so very helpful because he has all kinds of reptiles as pets.
