[b]Hi my name is Sheridan and my boyfriend found a 5 inch long 4 inch wide what I believe to be a red eared slider. He said it was in the road and being the animal lover he is he brought it home. I have read about these turtles and I know they require alot of work. I am not 100% sure I want to commit to keeping Tortia the turtle...which is it's temporary name. Can anyone suggest where I can take it. I was thinking a local spca or pet store but I dont want them to kill it. It really upsets me that someone didnt want to care for their pet and just tossed it aside so I really want to help him....I really appreciate any help I can get.[/b

Just becuase the turtle was in the road doesnt mean it was a pet. The turtle was probably wild, and just wandered away from the water. They do that. You should take it back where you found it but get if off the road, or to a pond/lake/creek/river near there. Return it back to the wild.

They are not native to your area so your boyfriend was probably right. It was a pet turned loose. I would suggest looking for a rescue in your area. I'll see what I can find.

In my research I assumed these turtles don't naturally live in Pennsylvania but I went to the pet store yesterday and the lady who worked there said that they do. I would gladly let him go free but he was found on a busy street no where near water so I can't imagine where he would have come from. I borrowed a tank from a friend and followed the quide lines I found on the site to set him up. He has a place to bask and swim. He is not eating thou. I got him turtle pellets and I also put some carrots in the water, but no luck. Any suggestions for feeding? I am currently looking to find him a permanent home. I really dont want to take him to the spca.

They sometimes stop eating out of stress for a few days. I got mine (which happened to be a rescued one to from a wrong environment) dried shrimp and he loves them. He didnt start eating until the second day we had him (or maybe was the third).

He finally started eating today. I saw him eat some of the turtle sticks. He didn't eat the collard greens or spinach yet.
