it is NOT a snapping turtle.

It IS a slider or cooter of some sort..

most likely a cooter. Need more pics, pics of the top of the shell and bottom of the shell. pics of the rear end, tail, claws etc.

Definately not a snapper though.

Very cool! I've never seen a cooter that big, but I have heard about them. Please don't remove it from the wild or relocate it to seemingly 'safer' place. Observe and learn from him, but don't disturb unless he's endanger of being hit by a car or tractor.

not being able to see the feet makes it hard, but going by the way the shell looks... it doesnt really even look like an aquatic turtle to me. I havent ever heard of a cooter being that big... but sliders can definetly be that big... but if its non aquatic its not a slider...

Hmm.. There is no doubt to me that is is absolutely an aquatic. While I think I can see what you are intending related to the shell, it's the stripes that seals the deal in my mind. There are few if any tortoises with the markings this fellow has. The face and legs scream cooter/slider.

I'm not sure we will ever receive more pics, but I would be interested in further speculation. have you run across striped tortoises? I'm always open to learning more....

To speculate further.. Based on the claimes SCL of ~14" and the shape of the scutes you can see, I'd have to guess it is a RES.

You are probably right now that I look at it again... but i just can't see it being a cooter. The size just doesnt fit. Im going to have to second the RES. lol.
