I found the little guy stuck under my fence in the backyard and my 4 year old little girl fell in love with it. I'd liek to know what kind of turtle it is and how I should set up a tank, what size tank, what to put in it and what to feed the little guy. I love animals but have very little experience with turtles...

Great site by the way!

If it helps.....

I am located in Souther New Jersey, close to Atlantic City, and I live just in front of the Forsythe Wildlife Refuge. If this is a water turtle, for a little guy, he got pretty far from the nearest water.

I actually and stumped... but its not suggested to take turtles from the wild and domesticate them. Turtles that are born in the wild have natural instincts to stay alive... they arent tame creatures, and taking them out of the wild can actually do more harm than good... you are taking them out of free range and putting them in a little tank. If you want a turtle go to a pet store and buy one... these were born and raised in captivity and are more suseptable as pets.

Hmmmm.

It does look like a mexican white lip, but it also looks like a Chilean Box Devil. CBD's are highly poisenous. Once infected there is a delay of 8 weeks before death sets in. Some people think that Bruce Lee was killed with CBD venom slipped into his health shake to hide the bitter taste.

I would verify this as soon as possible because the antidote can only be found in the Andes, and takes close to a Month to be delivered. Don't go to a pet store to verify this, you need to go to the Seattle Zoo which has the best Turtle expert in the Uniteed States.

Good luck.

Well you've certainly come to the right place for turtle identification since The Snapper here is a turtle himself. I would definitely have to say that what you have there is either a box turtle or my date for Friday night. Arrow

yeah it is a mexican white lip and you realy should put him back in the wild because its not nice to take a turtle from the wild unless its like seriously injured i only took a baby yellow belly cus some1 cut its foot off and i didnt want it to die of infection but we released it as soon as the vvet said it was ok

He's so cute! Kind of looks like an Ornate Box turtle. In which case it's a land turtle. Check the care sheets above on this site and other sites online for pictures to be sure as you don't want to be misled.

It looks like its less than a year old too, maybe even from this season. If you choose to keep him, make sure you can give him a better life than that in the wild. A lot of people underestimate the work involved with keeping a turtle and the space they need to be happy.

A wildlife refuge seems like a great place to live to me, but where it's a baby, it's chances of survival in the wild are pretty slim. Also, in some states it's illegal to take in wild turtles.

Good luck with whatever you choose! Thanks for sharing him with us!
