My big Turle Amen-Ra seems to be healthy but i dont see him/her eating as much as it used too. It just really seats there on the lilly pads and bathes in the lamp. and It swims to the bottom and comes back put it doesnt paddle when it gets near the top it just floats to the top. Any prognosis?

Hmm... just floating to the top -

That would make me ask questions as well.

I wonder how big Amen-Ra is, what speices, how long has this been going on and what is the standard diet..

Lots of things could affect this turt.

Upon further investigation it appears that the OP received quite a bit of help regarding his two RES, and participated quite a bit in the forums. If i had more time I would go back and read the history and summarize it - but I have neither the time nor the motivation Wink

This was posted in 2002. LuciasAmen-ra hasn't been on our forum for some time now.

We leave the older posts so we can learn from them, but responding to old posts has caused some confusion in the past.

If your turtle is floating, and wont eat and spends all the time in the sun that is a HUGE indicator that it has a respiratory infection. I had a turtle die of one once. They are very common in turtles. They stay in the sun all day bc heat is how they can fight this. They float in the water and it is hard for them to swim down into the water... they don't eat as well. Here is what you need to do... since you seem to have caught it early. Raise the water temps by 10f, and the basking area by 10 to 20f. this will allow the turtle to bask in much much warmer temps and fight the infection. Try promting the turtle to eat with tuna since it has such a pungent smell it may tempt it. If you don't see an improvement in about a week (which you should) Make an appointment with a herp vet. Hope this helps.
