It appears to be an alligator snapper, see the three ridges down the back.
These guys take an experienced owner as they grow up to 2 feet long and weigh 150+ pounds. The best thing to do is to turn him loose in a good habitat. To do so call your local Fish, Wildlife and Parks and ask.

Here is some good information for you, that will tell you about them.

And some pictures of 'Ol Bob, an adult snapper.

Bad deal. I still recommend calling FIsh, Wildlife and Parks. In many non-native areas it is illegal to keep these because they will dessimate the native local population if it gets loose. They may want to know where you found it to try and find any others. They were probably breed by someone who couldn't get rid of them due to the laws and they dumped them. HAppens more than you could imagine. Look at the problems in Florida with captive animals being released.

it really hard to tell whether it is a common snapper or an alligator snapper at this stage. they will grow out of those ridges. and it is about the time when they looking for water after they hatch. mine is a common snapper looks very similar. you will know soon enough. the common snappers grow much faster but wont get as big as the alligator. the common will have a lot longer neck. i have mine in a similar set up to any aquatic turtle for the time being. after about 3 years you will need to either move to a pond setup or large tank. this is a great site for snapping turtle care, both common and alligator. http://www.chelydra.org/
