| I recently acquired a small turtle from a friend. She had it in water, with rocks to climb and a heat lamp on during the day. I have no idea what KIND of turtle it is. He's dark green with an orangy red stripe down the middle of his back. He has claws, and a little bit of the orangy markings around the edge of his shell. I'd include a picture but don't know HOW! There are also orange stipes on his legs. |

I have a painted turtle, and that sounds like one. Does it have any yellow? _________________

| Yes, it does have yellow on his legs, neck and head! I have a heat light in a 20 gallon aquarium with about 2 inches of water. Plus a few large flat rocks. I was told to change the water weekly, and then scrub him with a toothbrush to get the algae off. Any other suggestions?? I've been reading up on turtles and there's so many different ways to take care of them! |

This site has a lot of info about turtle care, so you're in the right place. Check out the care sheet tab above and also see if you can find some pics online to make sure what you have is a painted turtle. Black with orange markings could also be a box turtle in which case the care is totally different.
Good luck! _________________ I brake for turtles! |
