Hello people Very Happy

Could anyone tell me what foods Map Turtles from 1yr old and upwards can eat please?

Hi Terry & Donny,

From what was also said in the previous thread, you're two turtles look more like yellow bellied sliders than map turtles. But the food is pretty much the same.

1. High quality store bought turtle pellets (as your guys are young, they might be picky, so you might want to try out a few different kinds before you get one big container. Also, the pellets may have to be broken up a little at first)
2. Dried shrimp/krill
3. Cooked chicken and turkey
4. Tuna fish or sardines
5. Feeder minnows (don't worry, they'll catch them Razz

)
6. Try some roughages like leafy green lettuce and spinach or kale. They may not eat it, but it's good to offer it as turtles do need more and more plant matter as they get older.
7. Any crickets, grasshopers, flies, or worms you can find outside your house or at the pet store.

Best approach for smaller turtles is to put them in a separate tupperware container to eat out of with an inch or so of water in it. It makes less mess and the turtles can see the food better without it getting wasted and forgotten at the bottom.

Not spinach, it has no nutritional value for turtles.

Spinach and broccoli contain oxalic acid, which blocks calcium absorbtion.

Lettuce has no nutritional value, use romaine

We have just given them a bag of Brine Shrimp, they were loving it, would that count as there meal for the day? They seem to be very greedy. what do i do as i wanna keep feeding them?

My turtle LOVES the brine shrimp/krill too, but it's more of a treat than a staple diet as they are high in protein and not much else.

It's good to keep with variety and mix it up.

when yur feeding the chicken and shrimp do you dry tank them? then they eat it ?? because wouldnt the water get dirty easy?

Turtles, like RES- semi aquatic, need to be in water to swallow their food. They would starve if you dry tank them to feed them. If yo uare worried about the mess, feed in a seperate container. A little pail works for some or even a small plastic shoe box type container would work.
