I have not checked in in about one year but still have my two cute turtles. I have had them for three years and they are getting pretty big. They are in a 55 gal (long) tank and I have it full of water. There is no obstruction in their swimming area so they seem happy but is it ok to keep them in this size? I really can't handle a bigger one but I might have a chance to buy a 75 gal but is it worth it?

Hi,
I was wondering how big they are... Soon they may have to be seperated even if it seems like they get along well. Turtles get very aggressive as they get older, even kill each other sometimes, especially if the tank is not big enough.
If you do decide to keep them together, just know the facts... if you are, I would suggest a 75 gallon tank if they are over like 4 or 5" long, shell wise. Mine's around 9" (I only have 1) and I have her in a 55 gal tank with the water filled up most of the way and a nice dock area.
They say 10 gal per 1" of shell length, but I personally do not follow that rule. My house is not big enough and I am not rich enough!
Good luck in whatever you decide to do! _________________ I love my turtle....
My wonderful sister payed out the wazoo to get me her so I guess I better love her |

| I think they are about 6" each and - yes - they get along. I know they need more room but I don't have the room or money either. I would not mind getting rid of one of them but I have not found a good home for one. I will not ship him only hand one over to a new owner and they are hard to find. I love my guys. |

Instead of handing one over why don't you just set up another tank. You can use a rubbermaid tub instead of a tank and they sell those pretty big for about ten bucks. I was on a budget when I put together my tank and I put it together for about 100 bucks (not including food or a UVB light). That way you could keep them both and it might actually be cheaper than buying a bigger tank cause those can get pretty expensive.
Just a suggestion |
