That's about the sum of it.
I've a female turtle, Mrs T, who I've had for about 3 years. About 4-5 months ago I introduced a male turtle, Gareth, into the same tank.
Mrs T's shell is about 8 inches long, Gareth's maybe 5. (don't know if this info will help/is important or not!)
Anyhoo, they seem to get on pretty well, take turns sitting on each other etc, have nevr thought. But I just noticed today while Mrs T was basking that the end of her tail looked a bit bloody and soar. I hadn't seen this before. I kept an eye on her for a bit longer and all of a sudden Gareth came up behind her and bit her tail! I've been watching them for the last couple of hours and Gareth has gone for her tail 3 more times and has hada little nip at Mrs T's flesh just above her back leg.
Mrs T doesn't seem overly distressed by this and is not biting back but I don't really want her to be getting bitten constantly.
Is this normal? does it mean something? Should I separate them? The basking rock they have is only big enough for one of them to sit on at a time and be out of the water, is Gareth just jealous because he wants to bask to and therefore would a second basking rock stop the biting? (Though I have noticed him nip at her under the water a couple times, not just when she's on the rock)
Help please! |
