|
|
I have one other question. The pet store where Suzanne and I got our slider is also selling baby musk turtles. They only get to be about 5-6 inches, they say, compared to the sliders.
We'd like to get a second turtle in a few weeks so Tucker isn't an only child. Will it be safe to get a musk turtle since they're both babies? When they reach full growth, with Tucker the slider almost twice the size of a musk, will they be able to get along (if they've grown up together)?
feedback would be appreciated, I would rather buy a second slider if the musk and slider together is a bad idea. |

generally, mixing species is a bad idea. this is especially true for species of different sizes. i would go with another slider or just leave your turtle alone. they dont need companionship. you may end up with one dead turtle, hurt turltes, or baby turtles. _________________ I love my turtles! |

| Or if they start fighting you will need to seperate them so look at space too. |

Please please do NOT put a musk with a res, I have just gotten a baby musk only 1 inch from someone who had it in with a res and it bit the res in the head and killed it. Musks aer meat eaters and will bite anything that moves!
This goes besides the fact that res are deep water turtle's and musks are shallow water turtle's. At full grown a res needs at LEAST 10 inches of water and a musk at full grown has to have less then 8 inches. Res like to swim and need to be able to do that, and musks toddle about the bottom of the tank. They are way too different to put together. |

my 3 res, about 2 inches, got along great with my 2 baby musks, less than an inch, and they once acted aggressive to eachother. one of my res even liked to come over and sniff the baby musks butt every now and then.. go figure
anyways the musk turtle will get a good bite when they get larger.. my smallest one chased away a blue crayfish that was about 4 inches long nose to tail. that was quite a site
anyways tiffany is right, my baby musk dont enjoy the deep water like the res does so i'm going to have to renovate my tank yet again..
anyways do you live in san jose, ca? just curious because where i live, it's kind of uncommon for a pet shop or fish store to sell musk turtles. i only know one store that does |

| I live in Abbotsford, British Columbia. Thanks for the advice, we're just going to get Tucker another of his own kind... it's definitely easier as far as tank set-ups go. |

i just noticed i say anyways quite alot
anyways, i meant to say they never once acted aggressive to eachother. but now i'll never know how that goes cause i found the sliders a better home
so anyways, musk turtles are cute aren't they? i've seen a full grown one and while their shell loses it's godzilla like qualities, they still look relatively the same as far as proportions go... big round shell and a big cute head.. oh and they turn a brownish color |

| I looked into getting a musk in the summer and heard from quite a few people that kept them sucessfully with basking turtles. I decided to go for a map in the end though! |

I have a 10 year old female common musk and a 1 month old common musk and both bite res....the baby killed a res hatchling...bit it in the head. The adult one has bitten tails and everything off the ones she was with at the last owners.
Aggresiveness with musks is very common, but that just doesn't say that the musks and res NEED different setups. Res are very good swimming and to put them into shallow water is just cruel. And a musk needs shallow water..to put them into deep water is cruel. Imagine taking a human baby and throwing them into a 5 foot deep pool -same as a musk in deep water, then take an adult human and put them into a baby pool -same as a res in shallow water. And there is no reason for it, if you can't set them up the way they SHOULD be then please don't get them. |
