I came home from work and my 5 yr. old RES female, (MOXIE), was swimming around the tank with the male turtle, (Soupy), stuck to her tail end. They were tail to tail. It looked weird. Soupy's head was tucked into his shell and he was just along for the ride. He looked like he was sleeping. BUT... when they saw me, they got all excited and started to swim in opposite directions. They tugged & tugged and finally popped apart. It was horrible! Soupy had this big red mushroom looking thing coming out of his tail!! I got so worried because I thought he was hurt. I went to pick him out of the tank and the red mushroom thing just disappeared into a slit in his tail. YIKES! He is fine now, thankfully. I guess I can surmise what the red mushroom thing was. It was huge! I can't believe...well you know what I mean. OY!
Has this ever happened to anyone's turtles? Why does it happen?
