My female red eyed eastern box turtle laid me 3 eggs last night. She was trying to dig a nest in her outside pen for the past week, but the gound is to hard. I brought her inside a few days ago and put her in an aquarium with moist soil. She finally laid her eggs underneath the heat lamp, where the soil is warm.
I put the eggs in a incubator and noticed they are starting to turn a nice white color today, which means they are fertile!
Infertile eggs usually turn a wet orange color and later collapse and grow fuzz.
I have also posted a picture of the mother. You may have noticed she has a big crack in her shell. This happened a long time ago and is completely healed, which is amazing to me. I don't know how it happened. I am her second owner and the first owner said she had this healed wound when he received her.
This momma turtle has given me 3 hatchlings already this year. Hopefully these new eggs will hatch to! Probably in November.
The middle egg has the illussion of being fat. It is just sitting up on end, at an angle and not laying flat like the other two eggs..
Healed shell close up.
