Check this out. It happened in Lebanon (Middle East) 3 days ago. Good work those people did Razz

Quote:
New rescue of its kind: A Sea turtle!

Four days of being pulled and pushed around by waves in and out of shore with weak limbs and calling death to come upon and take that misery away ended up being the least of Dude’s worries, a newly rescued 64 kilo sea turtle.

Her name was inspired by the famous Disney movie “Finding Nemo”, and her condition was and still is not at its best. She was hit by a speeding boat that left her with a broken skull, ripped mouth, bloody shell and ruptured eye.

BETA received the rescue call early morning on Tuesday June 13th by a kind lady who spotted the sea turtle’s painful plea for help. Two of BETA team rushed for help momentarily after the call to rescue “Dude” from the wretched state she was in and safely accompanied her to our vet.

For a better treatment, ARCHELON, The Sea Turtle Protection Society of Greece was immediately contacted and their contributed help is the main reason Dude is still breathing today. They have put us through their sea turtle specialist who is corresponding with our Vet, Dr. Ali Hemadeh, to save Dude. And indeed, she is more alive than she ever was in the last four days.

Dude is currently with BETA, in a small pool, getting all the treatment, love and care. Once she is healed, she will be released back to her natural environment.

We wanted to share with you our new rescue of its kind , for more information you can contact us at: animals@beirut.com and for donations you can donate at: http://beta.beirut.com/donate.php

Kind Regards,

BETA

Crying or Very sad Poor baby. Her wounds don't look to bad with the assistance she has recieved. That skull fracture will take the longest to heal.

I love these organizations that help the turtles out, and I am glad there was one available to her. They have a really neat site too. Thanks for sharing that with us Dixieee. Smile

Yes she is still young. She appears to be a Green Turtle and they get 80-100 cm in length and weigh about 100-180 kg. They eat sea grasses and are common in most seas world-wide.

oh ok so it doesn't get BIIIIIG like other sea turtles. interesting, isn't that a whole other world?! that's the update on the girl..the good news Razz then comes the bad news Exclamation

Quote:
Dude’s update – the sea turtle

Dude is still alive, Dude decided to heal, Dude decided to live again!

He knows he is in good hands now and that he is getting all the necessary medical care and affection he needs to survive and that’s what’s keeping him hanging on!

According to Archelon’s vet, The Sea Turtle Protection Society of Greece, Dude needs about six months to completely heal and get back to his normal physical state.

During this time, BETA is and will be providing Dude with the following daily treatment:

* Baytril injections 6 ml + Catasol injections 6 ml: for US$ 44 / day
* Ringer’s Lactate 1 litter: for US$ 12 / day

These medicines are very rare in Lebanon and it is being a difficult task for our vet to get them through special orders from abroad.

Also, everyday, one of BETA members go to the seashore to get fresh sea water for Dude. BETA’s vet, Dr. Ali Hemadeh, makes an international phone call to Greece (to Archelon’s vet) every other day to keep close cooperation and follow-up on Dude’s health and to get all the possible medical advises for his well-being and improvement.

BETA also had a pool being constructed especially for Dude, for him to be more comfortable in it which cost was US$ 400.

This is a call for financial help!

Dude needs a daily cost of approximately US$ 65 between medication, phone calls to Greece and vehicle fuel to get to the seashore and back to him with sea water.

This is an average of US$ 1,950 a month and $ 11,700 for six months.

Without YOUR help, Dude will not be able to make it as BETA’s financials are very limited!

Please help Dude today. No matter how big or small, your donation surely counts!

You can donate online at: http://beta.beirut.com/donate.php or at our donation box at Pet Care Veterinary Clinic in Hamra. Please don’t hesitate to contact BETA at animals@beirut.com for more info.

Thank you!

Update:

Quote:
Dude, the Sea Turtle

For those who cared for Dude, for those who were concerned about his health and his wellbeing and for those who donated money for his medical treatment – no matter how small or big – Dude is in a much better physical state now and is being taken care of by the Lebanese Ministry of Agriculture as of 05 July, 2006.

Once Dude is completely healed and is able to make it on his own in the sea, he will be released to where he belongs.

We would like to especially thank the Greek vet from Archelon, Dr. Litolitof. Without her medical advices and her careful follow-up all the way from Greece, Dude wouldn’t have survived his injuries. We would also like to thank Dr. Ali Hemadeh for all the meticulous medical treatment and care he provided to Dude. And of course we would like to thank in particular the people who helped Dude financially during his one month of recovery spent with BETA.

Kindly note that Dude’s expenses are no longer supported by BETA as of today. For those who still have the intention to donate, Dude thanks you for the thought and asks you to use this money for any other animal in need.

Thank you and kindest regards.

BETA

Dixieee, I was wondering if you have heard any more about Dude or if the Lebanese Ministry of Agriculture has released any more info about him?
