My husband found a turtle in the road and saved it and brought it home for the kids to see. We live in maine and I think its a spotted turtle, not sure. No idea what sex it is either. I would like to know what to feed it until my husband can bring it back to where he found it. Can anyone help me? Right now we have it in our kids old little swimming pool with water in it.

ok that's a wise decision cz wild turtles aren't good pets when there are kids around Smile

Most wild turtles have a hard time eating in captivity. They can also go a while without food so don't worry. Please sanitize the pool with a 5% bleach solution if you are going to let your kids use it again. ANY turtle, wild or even one purchased from a pet store, can carry a variety of bacterias some of which can be deadly (like salmonella).

Hi, I have 2 beautiful red eared sliders, Michelangelo and Speedy. they are 1 and 1/2 years old, and both measure 6 inches long. They have never been to a vet. I didn't know a vet can check them out! Where do I go? to a regular dog and cat hospital? Please advise. Thanks!

Hi , we bought our red eared sliders from a pet shop in dec 2004 and they were already hatchlings, in Dec 2004, and they measured 1 1/2" at the time. Does that mean they were born in Dec. 2004? the pet store said they were not for sale because it's illegal , but because my hubby delivers mail to them, they made an exception as long as they knew it was for an adult not for a child. How small are hatchlings when they are first born? What do you think? By Feb 2005 their shells changed, we were shocked when we returned from a 1 week trip in Florida how fast their shells grew and changed.

thanks in advance for any answers you have for me... Laughing

hmm u can't really tell how old r they unless u know when they were born cz many things affect the growth rate like living conditions, food, health, gender...

from www.austinsturtlepage.com

this is the only pic i could find now for a hatchling. i had one b4 that showed the size compared to the palm but my pc is formatted Twisted Evil

btw since u mentioned that they grew quickly in a short while, i think it happened cz they weren't in very good conditions at the pet shop (i bet there was a lot of them piled over each other) that's why they grew quickly at once to "catch up" with what they lost. my guess would be they're 3.5-4 years old now Smile

YES! the baby turtles were all piled up on top of each other in the tank. when I came to the pet shop in Dec 2004 right after Christmas, they had one giant tank with so many baby turtles all cramped up . there was a giant log on top of the water, and there were piles of them sleeping on top of each other. The owner told me that someone found these baby turtles in a creek somewhere and brought them to the shop . When I purchased these turtles, I didn't like the way the owner picked them up and then tossed them onto a flat area before bagging them . I told him Hey go easy there, geez.

I find it hard to believe you think my turtles must be 3 to 4 yrs old by now. They were so tiny when I got them. Im sorry I didnt take pictures of them when I first took them home. what a bummer! Crying or Very sad

Hi it's me again, I seem to forget things so easily. I forgot to mention thank you for posting that really cute picture of the baby hatchling. But what's that stuff all over his face and shell? Is that some kind of a disease or something? Was that hatchling just born or what?

oh sorry that was an old post that i didn't notice..seems like i was hibernating that time Rolling Eyes lol

it's not a disease, this is a hatchling that just "popped out" of the egg and what's covering it is soil or whatever it was in Smile
