Click on the link to see a video of my RES turtles mating... I believe one is male and the other female... the male first starts to vibrate his hands on her head... you'll see!

Males do this to everything. I have one that likes to try and do this to his reflection in the mirror behind his tank, and I had two males that used to do this to each other. The males do this as a way of stimulating the female to see if she is receptive. It is hard to tell exactly but it appears that you have two males. Easiest way to confirm this is to check the front claws. Males are very long and used just to preform this ritual. Females have short claws. Also your tank is very small with no real way for them to escape each other. That can be very dangerous as they get older and more territorial. _________________

You really should get them in a larger tank very soon. When they continue to do this, which they will until they sucessfully mate, not an option with two males , they have an increased chance of it turning to aggression. The turtle being chased has nowhere to hide or escape in that small area and so in self defence will fight back. First thing they will do is to start snapping at those front feet. I know many who have never seen this behaviour think it's cute, but it can and usually does end up with one being hurt if they don't have a good setup. This play can turn deadly in a tank with an unreceptive female and a persistant male as well. Females get tired of it and fight back too. _________________

I know.. i'm sorry.. i'm bad. its hard to find time to clean their bigger tank ! sigh. i hate having to pick up their tank with all that water.. all the nastyness just splashes around. is there an easier way to do this? when i go back into my dorm in college.. (in a couple of weeks) i may just put them in a large plastic bin ..15-20 gals. its so much easier then an actually glass tank! _________________ Claire, owner of 2 Male Red-Eared Sliders:

If they are 4" each then you really should already have a tank about 55 gal min. 75 would be better.
Males should have around a 75 gal for each adult and females need around 100gal when full grown. This you can figure is a base and each additional animal add at least half as much again. To small a habitat is the reason I have so many turtles missing parts in my rescue.
As for cleaning it there is something I like it is called a python. It uses reverse water pressure to clean the tank. I pump it out into my flower beds as it is a great fertilizer but you can easily put it down the drain. The old way is to use a short hose piece and buckets. I used to do that but we have 100 gallon tanks and using 5 gallon buckets was a killer. _________________

well i would get it but its way too big to fit in my dorm at school! .. plus it would be very noticeable.. considering im not allowed to have pets (even turtles) at our college dorms. i have to hide them from our resident assistant unfortunately. . when i have my own place they will be in a bigger tank.. unfortunately.. they have to live like this. :/
what do you mean turtles missing parts??? _________________ Claire, owner of 2 Male Red-Eared Sliders:

I have a turtle rescue and most of these babies came from people who bought two or more. Most were kept in tanks to small and when they started harrasing each other, with no place to hide, many had feet or tail bitten off. I also have one with a large chunk taken out of the back of it's neck, that was done by a large female that was tired of his flutterings. I have also seen where they will bite the heads off of a smaller turtle and one post in here was about two same age turtles had grown at different rates and the larger ripped of the smallers shell off causing it's death. I had one female that was a sweetie with babies but any other females in the tank and she would go for the limbs. I had three adult females all 6 yrs or more in a 150gal. One would terrorize the others so bad latching on to their feet that she is now in a 100 gal by herself. The other two have been sharing the larger so far without incident. All of my other turtles can share the same pond area in the summer time. I have lots of rock and branch formations so they don't have line of sight. Many, many basking areas and food is always spread around the whole outside of the pond. The shallow area is where the younger ones hang out and the deep is where all the older ones are. _________________
