Hi everyone,
My friends recently got me a RES for my birthday, his/her name is Butter (cuz I received Butter in a margarine container, but I thought Butter was more of a unisexual name, since I can't tell the gender yet, Butter is still a baby hehe). Anyway, just wanted to say hi and thank all of you for all the informative postings, I've been reading up lots on turtles ever since I got Butter.
I do have one question. I have to leave Butter at home for 2 days, and there isn't anyone at home that can feed him/her. A lady at the pet store recommended this turtle-shaped block and said that some people found this very effective. I was just wondering if anyone has used one of these before and how much of the block should I put in the water? Or if there are any other suggestions? Thanks in advance! |

If the turtle shaped block your talking about is Dr Turtle - that is not food or calcium. It's not really for eating, and it's waste of money.
Two days isn't really that long. I would just give plenty of pellets and leave some lettuce/plants for her to eat. Maybe get some guppies or minnows. |

| thanks! i don't know if it's Dr Turtle, cuz it doesn't come with a label. one prob that i worry about is if i leave pellets and food, will my RES eat it all up right away? |

welcome to the board, happy birthday, and congrats on new baby butter
2 days is ok, i don't think it will begin eating till then anyways cz new babies don't act so normal for the first week or two but just in case it decides to eat keep something for it in the tank.
good luck and if u need anything or want to share anything we will love that. btw, we love to see pix of the baby too _________________ Wed 10/27/2004 is the worst day..i lost my best friend Leo

Welcome to the board!! Congratulations on your new baby! I agree with fishandcandy, Butter should be fine on his own for two days, and even if he eats up all his pellets quickly, if you leave some floating plants (romaine, or anacharis... if you want to spend a "little" more money) he'll have something to "graze" on. But dixieee has a really good point too, if your turt is that new, he might not be ready to chow down just yet! Good luck with Butter and we hope to see pics! _________________ shade & sweetwater! |

thanks for your replies! another alternative is just to bring Butter on the bus with me... but i think that would create too much trauma for the little guy (?). i will post up pics of my little turtle later! |

Welcome!! Glad to have you as a member of the board!
I wouldn't take little Butter with you. The two days alone will be good for him to adjust to his new surroundings. He probably won't eat much anyway. Usually new turtles are stressed and it takes them a while to feel comfortable.
There are vacational feeding blocks for turtles, but I don't think you will need one. I would go with what the others suggested... some greens and maybe a couple feeder fish. He should be fine.
Good luck and keep us posted!! _________________ -= Shannon =- |
