|
|
Heya all!
I am new to the forum. I am thinking about getting a tortoise. I would like to get one that will stay relatively small, but I am not too familiar with the different types. I was thinking perhaps a Russian Tortoise?
Any suggestions would be awesome. Thanks! _________________ -= Shannon =- |

Thanks for the suggestion.
I looked up Ornate Box Turtles, and one site said this:
| Quote: | | Ornate box turtles are among the most sensitive and difficult of North American species to maintain successfully. We do not recommend this species for beginners. |
I am a little afraid to buy one now... my only experience is with Painted Turtles, so I am new to land turtles and tortoises. _________________ -= Shannon =- |

Not true......I have alot of experiance with Turtles and Tortoises and I would recommend an ornate for a starter. I would recommend a three toed first but ornates arn't that bad either. Just food, water, temp, and good ole sun light at least twice a week and your good to go. Well room to live and love too |

I did a lot of research and I am going to go with a Russian Tortoise. I should have him in about a week or so. _________________ -= Shannon =- |

I read that too, KSB. But thank you for confirming it!
An online friend of mine has a 3-Toed Box Turtle, and he is so adorable!! But after reading so much on Russians, I think I am getting attached, hehe.
Also, it's okay Dixee. I really appreciate you looking it up and letting me know. _________________ -= Shannon =- |

That is my online friend's turtle!! You must be a member of ChatReptiles.
Yes, that is Buttercup, the Three-Toed Box Turtle.
You can see more pictures of her here. _________________ -= Shannon =- |

I like the Russians, I think they are adorable. But I think my choice would be a Herman's.

How large do they get?
Edit: I looked it up. They do seem like a good candidate... an Eastern Box Turtle, a Western Hermann's Tortoise, or a Russian Tortoise have all been said to be good beginner tortoises, and also stay fairly small.
Eastern Box Turtle - 4"-6"
Western Hermann's Tortoise - 4"-8"
Russian Tortoise - 4"-10"
After reading so much on Russian's, I feel so attached to them...but with my luck, I would get the one that grows to be 10 inches!! _________________ -= Shannon =- |
