My adult RES is a "moody" little thing but a joy to watch none the less. If you put your finger in front of her she might try to bite it...its kind of funny I guess...biting the hand that feeds her. It is a different type of bite from when she eats. I can tell it is an aggressive bite because one time I put a piece of lettuce in front instead of my finger thinking maybe she just thought my finger was food. She drew her head inter her shell and opened her mouth slightly and then snapped out real quickly to bite it and drew her head back in, and when she bit it she did not swallow. she just sat there with a piece of lettuce in her mouth. The only reason I know this is because i have had to take her out of the tank recently to apply medication to her shell. (she is a new addition to my home so she is also not yet used to me). The strangest thing happens some times though. the other day, when I took her out of the tank, she brought her head in, opened her mouth slightly, and then i could have sworn I heard a hiss! I mean a real hiss like the sound an angry cat makes only softer! It happened a few times, and I was wondering if anyone elses turtles hiss?! It's a little funny to me as this is something I didn't expect from a turtle. Ofcourse, I don't want her stressed, and she didnt do it today or yesterday so i'm thinking she is getting a little used to me?

oh! I found something interesting today... It makes sense...I found it on "Austin's turtle page" I really like the way his site is set up. I find it a really good "beginner friendly" site

Why Does My Turtle Hiss at Me?

Your turtle is not mad at you and is not threatening you. Their shells don't allow them to expand or contract when they breathe, so when they take a deep breath and their lungs fill up, it takes up a lot of room in their shells. So when they are scared or startled, they want to bring their head and legs into their shell for protection. With their lungs being full and taking up all that room inside, these legs and head won't fit....so they have to expel a good percentage of this air to get their lungs to deflate so they can fit their appendages inside. This sudden rush of air makes a hissing noise.
