I've had my 2 baby RES in what some call the "Death Bowl" since June. They've actually loved it. I've depended on outside sun for basking and that suited them fine. We live in Georgia. The temps are lower now and have purchased a 10G tank. I've seen the "rule of thumb", but this seems soooo large at 10G. They are both about 1 1/2" in size. We are on a budget but have purchased:
10G Tank
heater
floating beach
thermometer
pretties, like gravel, plants and big bridge they climb on.
basking lamp
I'm going out to get new heater....hubby got wrong one.
Question: The filter we got looks like the type in the sample tank pic. but splashes out a lot! I don't want to raise the water too high as to give turts a way out. How to prevent all this splashing and just get a smooth water flow???
Also, they don't want to bask now?!?! kinda worried! They've always been shy baskers and would dive in water when anyone approached. What to do???
Also, they are really active, but eating less?? They are used to food being low and maybe having to swim up and get it is more of a challege. ?
We don't have a reg light, just a basking lamp. How important is this?
Our one pet store went out of business and we just have "Walmart"! yuck. The nearest one is kinda far, but I went there yesterday to get the floating beach and basking lamp.
I'm happy w/ the 10G, but wonder what essentials I'm missing. Thanks.
Oops! Last quest. I did have dried shrimp from Hartz that they looooved! We ran out and the other stuff just doesn't have appeal. suggestions??
Thank you.

not acting like they did b4 is somewhat normal now bcz of the change. give them some time and they'll get used to all the new stuff. they'll get used to the new food too. just like new turtles _________________ Wed 10/27/2004 is the worst day..i lost my best friend Leo

if you can find more dried shrimp, feed them a little of both, either at separate times or both together... also if the filter really isnt working for you, i find the ReptoFilter works great, its specially made for turtles and amphibians so it can work in as little as 2 inches of water..... if its just the noise of the splashing from the water, my neighbor put a piece of flexible plastic just below where the water came out so it made a soft waterfall...... hope this helped! _________________ I'm back!
