I wasn't quite sure where else to put this. I only got my little baby RES two days ago and he(I am assuming for now..lol)was quite active, swimming around, diving, and checking out his new home all day until it got later and he slept for a few hours. (which gave me a heart attack as I didn't know they could sleep under water..haha) then yesterday morning he was a bit quieter, but still moving around, though more on "land". He hid underneath the moss I bought for the tank, and then when I went looking for him late in the day I could only see the top of his shell as he had buried himself in the rocks...(larger aquarium stones) and then each time I check on him (he's also under moss) it seems like he's buried a little further down...
I have turned off the light (only a small 25W bulb right now until I can order a proper uvb bulb) but still have the filter running right now...he didn't eat anything as he only just came home, though there was some romaine lettuce and bits of fish in his tank in case he did want to eat....
I do not want to dig him up and disturb him if he is hibernating..but as I have never had a turtle before I am quite worried...it's not that cold in here, or in his tank....thanks... |

I didnt think he should be hibernating yet....I dont have the proper lighting yet...as the uvb bulbs have to be ordered online (the big tubes are the only kind we can find here in uvb...) and so I have to wait a bit until we get the money as they are quite expensive...I have a small 25W lamp (clip-on) pointed at the water and it gives off a good amount of heat.....I will have to get back to you on the exact water temp. The thermometer we have deosn't seem to change from it's 65(70) temp when put in the water, and while I know it's not very cold...I know the water is colder than the air...
I will hunt around for another thermometer and reply again when I have the temp!!
But in the mean time, should I leave him alone? Or dig him up or something??? I am just worried about him...is he alright like that??
*Edit*
the water temp, IF the thermometer is right, is around 61°F (16°C) which seems a lot colder than it feels to me.... but I havent had the lamp on the last two days and only turned it on about an hour ago, if that....
Will a 20W coil UVB light bulb heat the water?? I dont have the money at the moment for an actual water heater...but want to get one when I do...do they make relatively small ones? |

61 is too cold for the little guy you need to heat it up asap. if u can do a tradeoff i'll go for getting the water heater instead of the UV bulb. they're both extremely important but at least the UV can be replaced by direct sunlight for the meantime. btw, the UV bulb doesn't give off heat so it's not a good source to heat the water. water needs a heater and it's really important to boost their immunity up.
good luck _________________ Wed 10/27/2004 is the worst day..i lost my best friend Leo

Ok, I will look for a water heater first...I heard some can be as cheap as $20...and still very good...I have never looked into getting one, so dont know prices or which are good or bad here....I just dont want a really massiv one taking up a lot of room....cuz I still want to get a better filter as well...
Either way I wont be getting the bulb until I get a job...but hoping to have a good interview tomorrow....*crosses fingers* |
