You want the water to be deep enough so that if they get turned over, they can swim themselves rightside up -- so at least twice as deep as they are tall.
And they are lovely swimmers, lots of fun to watch -- so give them as deep water as you can!
As for escaping, you can put a metal mesh top on the tank and weigh it down with a light hood, if your turtle can reach the top of the tank. Mine would stand tippytoe on the basking rock and push up the corner of the mesh top, but it wouldn't move any farther, it would just go Bang! She couldn't get out but she could sure make noise. Now she's in a bigger tank and there's no way she can reach the top. |

my turtle would stand on his basking shelf and scratch the chicken wire cover then fall over backward..... it scared the bejesus out of me the first time it happened, but my mom told me hed been doing it for a week or two.... hes stopped doing it now... figures, once i get used to it!!!  _________________ I'm back! Hope I can help...
