Ok my turtle loves his tank and swims to his hearts content, but I live in Central Otago, New zealand and lately it has been really hot and our summer is only just starting, the average water temp get up to about 33-34Celcuis some days, so how do I keep the water cool or is that ok?? _________________ cant find something nice to say....... |

All animals are capable of heat stroke/exhaustion even turtles. That's pretty hot, usually they're water temp should stay in the mid 80s (approximately 30C), Is there anywhere that is cooler in your house? A basement or anything? If not I would suggest that you keep them away from any windows, so that they are not getting extra heat from the sun. If you feel like it is just way too hot for them or it is a particularly hot day I would dump some ice cubes in the tank, they would probably enjoy playing with them and it would cool off the tank. you may also want to think about getting another basking area, but with no heat source so that if they are too hot they can get out of the water.
I have never had this problem so this is all amateur ideas-
good luck. _________________ 2 big RES, 1 Flowerhorn Cichlid, 1 Cockatiel. I will alway hold a place in my heart for Daphne, my albino RES. |

ok finally someone who knows what hot weather is, still not in high 40's like here though lol ok first of all u wouldn't need heat sources anymore. turn off all the bulbs and even for the UV one, is there anything better than getting it directly from sunlight?? if u can provide that, take him out under direct sunlight for 1-2 hours daily and he'll be great. i don't know about ice cubes contact but i hate to imagine their soft skin sticking to ice, just like a tongue do u have an air conditioner at home? he must be fine with the help of that. especially if u got the turtle from New Zealand, u don't have to worry much bcz they have their temps customized for that environment, that's what the vet told me.
good luck and enjoy ur summer _________________ Wed 10/27/2004 is the worst day..i lost my best friend Leo

That's really interesting, however the ice cubes; which I have let mine play with will not stick to them because you float it in the water. They thought it was lots of fun! _________________ 2 big RES, 1 Flowerhorn Cichlid, 1 Cockatiel. I will alway hold a place in my heart for Daphne, my albino RES. |
