Yeap, I am still in shock but I cought them mating for real. First because I didnt expected so soon. They are RES,only one year and half old, the girl has 17 cm and the boy has 13 cm. I noticed they they got stucked in a weird position and when I came closer to the tank I couldnt belive my eyes . He had his penis, in her, but he was beside her, not on top. Like they were glued from the tails, this is how they looked . I panicked and I tried to split them but I couldnt. Since I have never seen such a weird thing I got scared, I left them alone but I watched them ( at 7 pm). After a few minutes they separated alone. ( Moderator edited due to unnecessary graphic content) I got scared, I thought that he hurted her or something but they both are ok. They are both calm now but the other 2 are weaving their claws. Even a small one, 7 months old, 9 cm -female is in heat and bothers the males that just ignore her for the moment.

So, my questions are:
They will do this again or it's only once a year?
How many chances are that she got pregnant and if she is how long will be the gestation? How do I know that she is pregnant?

And the last one, how the heck happened, cose they are too young,anyway! I cant belive my eyes!

I had heard that they had to be at least 5 years old before mating, I guess they forgot to tell the turtles Confused

These are my first turtles so I am learning as I go, sorry I don't have further info. Confused

this is weird. could it be that u got the wrong expected age for them?? if she's pregnant, she'll do a lot of digging. watch out for the eggs if any and separate them if u don't want it to happen again

The age is aproximatively correct because when I got them they were not bigger than a coin and they slept lots. So they were babies, not undeveloped turtles. They are only one year and half old and their dimensions are 6.7 inches and 5.3 inches.I have other 2 so I know how they are when they are babies.
That's why I was shocked. First because they grew so fast and developed so well but I didnt expect them to mate so soon. They played lots before (that mate dancing) but I didnt think they are so serious. Even a 6 month old girl dances and waves and does everything to get the boys attention. I am shocked as a mother of a teenager that discovered her child having sex!
Well, after the event that happened last evening, they slept together as usual, no fighting and I noticed that the criminal still goes around her tail. Other weird things happened before. The other older male , being rejected refused to eat for a while and was very nervous. Verrrry upset. He swimed lots up and down. Now he calmed down, basks, eats and became normal again.
The female, the tramp, was nervous too during the last months and had periods when she was biting the males around her. Like a PMS thing, happened only once in a while.
I wander if they will still grow, if they will still mate.

You really need to read the link I posted. You can find it easy as it is the sticky at the top of the breeding section. Also please remember that although some of what is concerning to you does need to be explained this is a family site and children are exposed to these posts and I personally don't enjoy getting emails from upset parents so please cool it with the graphics. First of all is your tank cool so that it stimulated them to breed? RES don't generally breed this time of year, it is usually in March through May and usually when they have been hibernated or at the very least had a temp drop. Then females don't go into "heat". Turtles don't have a pecking order, and the behaviors you seem to notice have no bearing on mating at all.

Thanks for the link. I read it.
The temperature in the tank is 75 F. The room temp. is constant and they eat the same as usual. Nothing different from the months before.
I do not intend to keep the eggs because I can not rise babies (no conditions and no place to sell after). I can not even afford to buy a new tank with all the settings in order to separate the mother. What should I do? Let her in the tank as untill now? Should I keep the eggs for a few days with the mother? She will still grow? Some animals while reach sexual maturity stop growing.

Turtles reproduct, too, not only eat, sleep or swim.
They have reproductive organs and we cant talk about this because...?
I didnt find on the net a picture or a desripition about their mating or about the aspect of the reproductive organs. I thought it is poo poo because it is black or all his intestines came out somehow . I know, stupid me but since it is a taboo subject I didnt have any information. I dont even know how they are called.
I am convinced that many other from this site would like to know about this, especially because can derive serious problems of health that would require a visit to the vet.
Anyway, I seem that I am not good at explaining so I kindly request your help of posting informations about this delicate matter in a special section where children would not be harmed.
I consider this site a scientific one, with serious informations and I appologize again thinking that my "graphic" details would enlighten others

i totally understand deesygirl's point cz if u want the truth, i was irritated by that too. there are many kids that come here to ask and share stuff about turtles exactly the way we do. ok even if they have to know that their turtles could do stuff other than swimming, eating, sleeping..is it appropriate that they know it from other people? it's the job of their families, teachers, or whoever they are responsible of cz u know how shocking it will be if they know the system and especially if they relate human beings to animals in that. Rolling Eyes

I defenetly agree that we dont make sexual education here and I appologize again. And again, my intentions were to share an experience and provide some details for others that might have no clue about this, like me. I seem that I opened Pandora's Box
Would be another topic or site where owners talk about this delicate matters since it is important as the feeding or other biological events.

Most people don't feel that needs to be addressed in as much detail as you wanted. You sound very immature if you need details of that nature.

There are many posts that deal with breeding in this forum and Willies article is very complete and includes all the information you need. Turtles are not a selective breeder. If the female is ready to breed she will. There is no "rejection" or "looser" as the males will try to breed with anything. A rock, plant or another male even. The site that Dix put up is a good one to and very easy to read.

wheeew. I must say that I fully enjoy this site because there is no "bickering" or cutting other people down. I think that this strand has taken a bad turn, so lets all relax. I understand that this can be a upsetting topic for some and others want as much info as they can on the matter to better understand their turtles. As this site keeps things child friendly Razz

you can't find the answers you are looking for here, and it was nice of you to appologize and request links. I have searched myself and can't find anything of much use as it was said it's all pretty common knowledge.

Might I suggest that anyone who has the specific answers that Striparella is asking for send her a private message and then you can work out any of the more specific questions that she might have. Cool

although I think most kids that are old enough to be on the pc, probly know the deal already, and or should be monitored, but I think the point has been gotten either way, just a little to much info, live and learn.
