My 2 R.E.S.'s are 4 yrs. old. All of a sudden my male took a bite out of the females neck & wouldn't let go. I reached into the tank and gently pulled them apart. The female now has torn skin on her neck.

Also, at night, the male does that turtle mateing dance to the female and she just swims away from him now. She used to do the dance with him but not any more. He chases her all over.

This is the first time I have ever seen him attack her. Do I need to separate them? I she in heat???

Has anyone had this problem?

Thanks

Thanks for your reply.

I put her back in the tank. YIKES! I guess I will separate them. I have another tank. It is much smaller though.

What should I use to clean the bite? Does she need to be kept dry?

Could she possibly have eggs and doesn't want to be bothered with him? They were always such good friends.....doing the dance together etc.

Cheers!

anytime Smile yes i guess it'll be better if u seperate them for a while. is she shocked?

check this about treating the bite http://www.austinsturtlepage.com/Care/medinjuries.htm#Bites,%20Cuts,%20Burns%20and%20Scratches

u may want to add some soil with her so if she has any eggs she'll lay them. is she digging around?

Thank you so much for all the great advice! That web link is awesome!

My female (Moxie), the bitten one, is now basking. I think she is OK and not in shock. I will take her out & treat the bite. and keep her separated.

She has nothing to dig in. I guess I can get some sand?? to see if she wants to dig herself in.

Thanks again.
