I use a All-Glass Deluxe Full Hood for my tank and I bought the ReptiSun 5.0 Fluorescent light for it. I carefully broke off the splash guard. What I'm wondering is will the ReptiSun be effective in transfering UVB to my turtle? The distance between the dock and the ReptiSun is about 6inches away. According to what they advertise, it can reach up to 12 inches. I guess I just want to know if my turtle will get enough UVB from it? I will be planning to get the ReptiSun 10.0 (Fluorescent) when I'm done with this light. Thanks in advance.

I think that 6 inches is reasonable and like you said you took off the splash guard so the rays aren't going through any glass. Should be fine. Laughing

Another question I have is does water block UVB rays? If so, is there an estimate percentage? Do RES have to be dry to absorb it? I've heard that UVB can penetrate into about 3 feet of water but I'm not sure.

Yeah. My tank is already setup where the ReptiSun 5.0 is above Survivor's basking platform. I just wanted to know if water filtered a certain amount of UVB rays because I turn the light on sometimes when I'm cleaning out his tank and I was wondering if he was also getting the UVB rays that way. As for his UVA rays, I bought the ESU Clamp Lamp (which part of the clip broke recently and I had to krazy glue the piece back) with a Zoo Med Repti Basking at 75 watts. In case you guys wonder, the clamp lamp can't possibly fall into the water. That is because I have a full hood covering the tank and I just lift up the door whenever it's basking time. The safety guard also prevents this from happening since it can't fit through the door. I'm unclear about the temperature around his basking area but from testing the temperature with my hand, it is much warmer then the water which now I keep around 74F. He does bask so I'm guessing the temperature is good enough for him now. I bought one of those $2 Marina sticker thermometer and it's useless. It's basically just reading the glass temperature I'm assuming and does nothing for me. I'm planning to get the ESU Digital thermometer soon when I have time. I also need to buy some aquarium glue to glue down the lizard liner. I feel that buying rocks to hold it down is a hassle when it comes to cleaning. I will be getting my digital camera back by the end of this month so I will take pictures when I get that back. I went to redearsliders.com (where I also notice that STRAY was a member there) and bought the power surge timer outlet when I saw it at their Online Deal forum. I should be receiving that by tomorrow.

As much as I would like to make up for his hours in basking (since he really hasn't for the past decade), too much of anything is never good. This site as well as others, which I'm sure you know, also recommends that the lights should only be kept around 10-12 hours a day. So I mind as well follow that guideline. It's funny because when I do turn off the clamp lamp when he's in the middle of basking, he starts to look kind of piss off a bit. Sometimes, I leave it on but other times I must close it. But then I throw in a few pellets or something and he decides that the deal is quite fair (shutting off his light for some food). Every time when he bask, his scutes gets all dried up and looks like it's about to peel off. Should I peel this off for him? I've read that it might hurt the poor guy. But from what I see, it's about to come off anyway but once he gets back into the water, it sticks back onto his shell. I can see water trapped under those scutes. What do you suggest I do?

I have been tempted myself to peel the loose scutes too, but it is better to just let them come off by themselves, you might make the shell bleed and it might get infected. Smile
